#3 - standard HP shortboard

I’ve made two boards before this one. The red hull inspired dog was a great learning experience of why not to integrate too many design aspects into one shape. It worked OK but it lacks the glide of a hull and turning off the tail of a fish. My second board was a 5’5" yellow mini-Simmons inpired quad with rolled entry, single to double with a little Vee out the back. This board works really well and gets used all the time.

So for my third shape I didn’t have any wiggle room. I was given a  6’2" P US Blanks to work with. I decided to make a standard shortboard with a clear sanded finish. I made a spin template from a CI Fred Rubble at my local SH. Then I  altered the dims a little to try and get the most volume out of the blank.

6’1" x 14 3/4" x 19 3/4" x 12 1/4" x 2 3/8

Single concave throughout.

For the fins I chose the McKee M5 system based on the McKee spread sheet. Rather than go out and get a flexible straight edge for the toe measurements, I measured the toe on a KS12 SemPro. So the front fins are toed 1/4" and the rears are stringer straight.

All that is left is lamination and sanding. I hope to get that done early next week. Then I’m outta town for 5 weeks so it will have some solid cure time and be ready for storm season in late August.

The outline photos make it looks like the nose isn’t straight. it’s just the glare off the door from the flash. This one turned out better and more simmetrical than my first two.

Those fin boxes came out really nice.

It’ll be interesting to see which fin setup your prefer up there, the thruster or quad.

Yeah I’m psyched to see how this will work here. I tend not to ride performance shortboards much becasue frankly we have fairly flat faced point waves that are better suited to flat rockers and wide plan shapes. So I kept the rocker low on this one - 2" in the tail and 4" in the nose. I really have no idea how it will all come together. the key is to not get too anxious to test it and take it out on a day when I should be riding a log or a fish.

today I laminated the bottom with UV resin. I’d never used it before and man how nice it is to not stress about time. I took lots of time time to prep and have everything ready for when it would be warm and sunny enough. the only flaw was some poorly laying fabric at the tip of the nose. no big deal. I’ll cut that off and lam the deck tomorrow. here’s a photo of the bottom just to keep the thread more visual.

nice board.

yeah UV resin is the best.
