Guess I broke the board when I posted this on Saturday huh? Kinda weird how some posts worked and some didn’t. Anyway… I did a longboard fabric nose inlay and used an excellent tip passed on by Mike D. I believe. I scribed a light outline for the inlay, taped the outline off and laminated the cloth into the outline. The hot tip was to shut down the overhead lights and use a flashlight (I used a 500K. rechargeable halogen Q-Beam) to backlight from underneath while cutting the easily visible tape line. Great idea! Now no worries with pattern or density of the cloth you choose. I used some really cheap/thin tape and had some difficulty in the darker areas of the pattern of the cloth I was using. Wondering if the 3M Blue painter’s masking tape is stable with polyester resins? Anyone use this tape successfully? Tom S.
Tom, if I were you I’d stick with a good quality automotive painting tape. I think the blue is more for house painting.
Yeah, that’s what it’s labelled. The darker color was what I was after to solve the problem above. Seems that Herb or someone mentioned using the Blue tape at one time for some special need. I asked because I too have faced the horror of using cheap tape from time to time… :} PS. Hey! I heard you got a good session in on those S.Chargers, interesting ride huh? TS>>> Tom, if I were you I’d stick with a good quality automotive painting tape. > I think the blue is more for house painting.
tom, i always use blue tape when i need to tape things off. especially good for hot coating. ive found that using masking tape can leave a sticky residue on the board and not pull as cleanly. the blue tape works just as well, comes off easily, and no residue. steve
I’m glad the light trick worked for you. I got that on the bruce jones site. Anyway, I have always used blue tape over a laminate layer (like when you hot coat and don’t want it running all the under the board). The blue tape is low adhesive and won’t leave anything behind when you pull the tape up like regular masking tape. It will work on the foam, but good masking tape is better because it will stick better to the foam, and for the most part is cheaper than blue tape, especially when you’re using anything wider than an inch. My advise, if you are using tape on a glass (laminate layer or hotcoat) use blue. If you are using tape on foam, go with regular masking tape.
I kinda run my coats alittle hot…okay, okay, okay…really, really hot!!!And sometimes the Blue tape will leave some blue c#*p behind, but nothing that I couldn’t quickly handle.Herb.
The blue tape is a long mask tape primarily used with house paint, and it’s not cheap. 3M 233 masking tape is about the best you can use for resin work. It’s also used as stringer tape when you airbrush a blank
