Hi Red,

i play around all the time... take 2 keys with me in the water every surf,

just for me to figure out which settings work in what conditions and depending on how "i" am surfing on the day...

makes a huge difference!

Dean,

Feedback on the install system:

Without line-up points on the jigs it’s pretty hard to get the 2nd routing accurate.  I know to take the centre hole out of the foam locater thingies, but I always seem to end up measuring to the back and front of the jig to get location right because the jig can shift when the install is on edge of concave.

I’d prefer to measure off the centre of the jig, so cross hairs would be good.  They could also be used to locate onto fin back and friont marks.

Maybe I’m not doing it right or often enough

I like the functionality of the system for tuning fin toe on new designs.

Hi Red,

if i understand u correctly,

you have the sponges?

if you do, then the hardest part of the installation is placing the sponges down.

once you have put your shapers dots on the blank (best to draw a sharp pencil line joing the 2 dots)

u then position the sponges (check the video link : http://www.4wfs.com/knowledge/manufacturers-instructions/round-box-installation?ba4bbe8ff8d43b102aeaf3264595170a=1b07d3b26e40a6f1eb814dc294410200 )

Installation

the Most important thing is to get the sponge with the dotted "indented" line to line up with the back fin marking.

then ,  the sponge has a "R" and a "L" marking to indicate which of the  3 small holes along the dotted indented line to use for each of the side and rear  fins.

as you stand at the back of the board looking towards the nose, the markings "R" for example refer to the right-hand side fin box. so we will position the circular dot (cut-out) from the side marked "R" on the sponge over the shapers rear fin dot.

once this is done, position the reaming sponge to follow your shapers line drawn.

you now have the correct rear fin place and alignment of the sponge.

when u position the router jig over the sponge, make sure there are no "gaps" on the left and right sides of the jig as that may cause the jig plate to "pop" off during router proceedure.

if it is positioned properly, it will be very sturdy.

the only word of caution would be when routering the side plugs that as u cut the hole (nearest the rail side of the hole) then apply your weight on the inside of the router (facing the stringer) this way avoiding the jig to tilt off the rail-side.

i hope this helps clarify,

let me know if theres any other info u need, ok...

Best Regards

how was yours?

Deano

Rock Climber                          hmm i wonder which one you are

HI Deano, i have got loads of questions if you have the time to reply,

what have you found the differences that the toe and cant makes from one extreme to the other ,say 1/4 inch toe, 8 degrees cant to 1/16 th toe and 0 degree cant ,

also do you still have a favoured posistion (cant and toe) that you originally set your fins that seems to work the best ,

finally how do you size your boards for a new customer,do you have a  customer weight to volume calc for your performance boards, thanks in advance ,pete

Hi Dean,

Glad you are eating well.

Thanks for the clarification.

I’ll give this a run when I finish setting up my new workshop

I’m finding the system useful (my standard fin settings have moved in an inch at the nose with no noticable effect on drive but a real benefit in getting vert and cutting back) and I really like the stiffness and foiling of the fins.
