does the cut lap with 4oz show as good as a heavier volan…A friend wants the look but wants to stay light…I no the whole pin drop of green tint trick but have the volan already?
i would imagine so, as the volan treatment is just the finish of the cloth, and as a matter of quantity, probably differs very little between 4-oz and 10-oz+ (assuming that it’s strictly a matter of surface area).
I figured it would show I know theres variations from batch to batch or manufacturers…im used to 10 oz really showing cutlaps…ive done 6oz E cloth no volan wash cut laps and if you look hard enough you can see the cut lap…I just thought the difference in thread cout would not show the volan as good
Test a patch!
Lam a little cloth onto the offcuts from your blank, see what it looks like against the white background.
Hot coat the tester so you really see what the contrast is like.
I your using UV it’ll be quick, but with MEKP, just wait til it gells then hotcoat the test panel straight away, you’ll know what the result is within a half hour.
Don’t leave it to chance, i’ve had boards turn out nasty because I didn’t take the time to check the color!
Kit
I used 2oz volan over wood. It was the only 2 oz cloth I could find on short notice. It was free lapped and still I can see the the lap especially at the nose where the laps overlap (does that make sense?). So I’m sure you’ll see the 4oz cut on a white blank.
