lam coat - squeegee so the weave is “just” covered?
free laps ok?
hotcoat - tape rails like usual?
what grit for handsanding the rails after both hotcoats?
pinline on hotcoat but give it one more hotcoat over it? Altogether 2 hotcoats won’t weight too much? Posca ok? Tape with tube acryllic OK? (Harbour method).
Just squegee as much resin out as you can, don’t leave pools or generous amounts anywhere (but I guess this is standard glassing knowledge…)
I do free laps with epoxy, they look ok, but with the west systems ti looks slightly green for a while and you can see your laplines, so you might want to go with cutlaps for a neater look.
you kinda have to work it into the weave, but a lot of the process is just letting the cloth saturate on its own. i like to pour about 2/3 of the pot in the middle and spread it around just a bit (but not really workin’ on it)…and then just let it sit while i go work on the laps. you can’t just sweep it over the rail like you do with poly…you’ve gotta work it in there. hold the bottom of the lap up with one hand and make sure you totally saturate the cloth. when you’re done with the laps, then go back and squeegee off the center. just make sure everything is saturated.
i like tints…it’s all cutlaps for me. i don’t see why not, though.
yup.
no need to sand in between coats.
the second hotcoat gives it more depth and allows you to polish it up to a glossier finish. i don’t do posca, but was going to go with the acryllic outta the tube Harbour method for my pinlines on the board i picked up today. you do it first and let me know how it goes!
Pretty much just do what you would do with poly but use half the resin. It isn’t that different accept that it’s easier. Using additive F helps everything go better. Use it in lams, hot coats and finishes. For sanding we start at 100 and then go to 180. West is for boats. Use a surfboard epoxy. Posca pens work fine.
Aloha all! shoot-dang GL, howzit?!? I finally took the step into the RR system. Super stoked! Watched Top do 8 boards, and I just mastered 2 of my own. I thought he was crazed when he told me 15 oz. of glue for a side. We use a drip tray system, and don’t waste any at all. A little sketch on 6oz. sides, I’d opt for a little more glue. I like how the material is a juicy consistency at first, and gets progressively more gooey. til it gets to where it’s moldable at the end. The material is perfect for my glassing style. The best part is the lack of odor. Next step is to get them in the water. Got a couple of new ones lined up for T. Kinimaka. The brother surfs hard, and it will be a good test of the durability factor. Mahalo Greg, and thanks to everyone here that’s sharing the news. Aloha…RH
The is a great epoxy use summary in the Resources/Articles section. Much of Greg’s instructions and posts, and some other good stuff. Pretty much everyone here uses Resin Research epoxy made first for surfboards.

So, is it available in … Australia , New Zealand , France , Japan , Britain , Norway , Spain , Sweden ? […to name but a few places where people post from on this forum ]

oh, come on…everyone knows that americans have no comprehension of the fact that there is a world outside our borders…we live in a continental fish bowl…and nothing outside that matters worth a damn (unless it has some profit potential…then we care).
Anyway…Chip, why don’t you be the Aus distributor?? You could kill…well at least get free resin for your sticks!! On GL’s web site there are a few countries listed as having distributors…I think france, costa to name a few…more on the way I am sure. We don’t all live in a bubble…honestly…have fun…
1. lam coat - squeegee so the weave is "just" covered?
Not covered, but still a very visible weave. Too much resin will be soft & mushy because its really very flexible. Just workslowly so it doesn’t foam up.

2. free laps ok?
Yes, but it seems that the chrome sizing is more visible with epoxy. I.E., even 6 oz can look green like volan.

3. hotcoat - tape rails like usual?
Yes, 3M 233 sticks, most others don’t.

4. what grit for handsanding the rails after both hotcoats?
Small surform.

Posca is fine. Rattle can gloss over, over the whole board if you like. Find a spray gloss without toluene. Fiberglass Hawaii has a good one that I’ve also found at OSH, but I don’t remember the name. White label & blue print. Future turns milky in salt water and looks like you had epoxy amine blush. Yuck. Hotcoating with UV poly also works great if you get tired of waiting 24 hours between hotcoats. With a dry lam, there’s plenty of texture and the poly will stick just fine.
Ok, which one though? The 2000 is the only one off your website that actually says it is for surfboards, but they all can be used? I searched through the archives and found nothing, so I’ll order some of yours when I figure out which one I need, and I can compare it to the west and find which one I like better. Right now, the west seems super durable, but I guess that’s because its made for boats?
If I order a 1.5 gallon kit, how much additive F do I need?
And does RR come with pumps, or do I have to get those sepperatly?
Call Sam in Melbourne,he will help you out. The 2000 and 2020 have different flex characteristics…depending on what you need, also fast or slow hardeners, both are for surfboards. The add F is sold in pints which can be bought when you get the resin. Once you try RR epoxy…the west will be history. You will have to get your own pumps/cups or whatever…I use a scale and disposable cups. Unless you are a good glasser…I would use cut laps, more prep but a cleaner finish. You will love the product…have fun…
*order the pint when you get your resin…a pint will go a loooooooong way at 1cc per ounce of hardener and double that for glossing/hotcoating…
Japan has Manueverline and Costa Rica has Albert Jimenez. Kauai has Topperboards and Oahu opens in about a month. Europe and Aus are coming as soon as I find the right distribution channels. We are also making plans in the Carribean. We cover the US pretty bwell right now with two distribution points of our own and four distributors.
Dang Rickster… glad to hear Tops moving some stuff around over there… Thereeesha says hey!
