I am almost done shaping my second board, but need help with the fin box placement. It is a 7'2" fish and I have been searching everywhere to find the specs on the fin box placement, but I can't find it. I wanted to have a 5 box setup so I can switch between 3 and quad depending on the surf conditions. I won't be doing the glassing or the fin box installation, so I just need to mark off where I want them to be. Can anyone help me with this? I have attached a picture of the board (90% shaped) Thanks in advance!
Loads of posts on Sways on this subject. Heres a few pointers… Greenlight have some suggestions on their template page. McKee placing gives more thruster like performance apparently.
I’ve just made a 7’1" swallow tail with 5 fins. FRONTS: trailing edge point at 12" from tail, 1 1/4" off rail, 1/4" toe in
REARS: 5 3/4", 1 1/2" off rail, 3/16" toe in.
CENTRE: 3 1/2" forward of tail
Cant say how that performs as I aint surfed it yet (2 week Brittany trip coming up). I suspect you’ll get lots of posts with differing suggestions. GOOD LUCK, Marty.
Test the can of Krylon H2o before spraying the board, I’ve found that some cans kind of spit glops of paint out, leaving thick spots that are darker than the rest. The board will measure from a straight edge across the tips of the swallow. Good luck and post some pics…
Just took the “plundge” and routed 5 fin boxes. Yes you can see that the Krylon paint ran, but it is kind of a test board. Tinting the resin next time.
If that was my board I’d measure the rears 6 1/2 from the tips. 1 1/2 off the rails. An inch between the rears and the leaders. Leaders the same distance off the rail as the rears. I’d probably put the center fin 3 1/2 from the tips. And I’d call it a swallowtail and not a fish. Bet it’ll be a fun board. mike
When painting the blank use good quality painters tape make sure that it is pressed down on the edges. Then spray a light coat of clear. That should prevent the bleeding under the tape.
