5 fin placement question (Mini Simmons)

I am going to do a (5) fin setup on my mini simmons / bonzer hybrid I am building (futures 3/4" deep). My thought is that I can change it around to match more conditions and have more fun. I also want a single board to have fun with on the east coast while traveling for work or in my small car (can’t bring the quiver), so pack more fins and less boards.

I have done a single fin and a thruster before but I am clueless on location, cant and toe for five fin setup. I have seen toe on some boards and parallel to stringer on others. I am thinking keep it simple stupid and go parallel.

Setups I am trying to accomplish (am I trying to do too much with one board?):

  • Twin fin

  • Thruster

  • Single fin with side bites

  • Quad

Board: 6’2" x 22.75" x 2.75" very little rocker, flat to single concave, round nose, cut off wide tail.

I know you guys know 100 times more about fin setup than I do.

Thanks for helping the village idiot!

I’m surprised I’m the first one to reply…I thought Swaylocks was about sharing the stoke or whatnot. Anyway I’ve thought of the same thing and I think you either need to ditch the twin fin Idea or the quad Idea/ thruster Idea. I think that twins with 1/4 inch toe in drag quite a bit. 1/8th would be better for a twin. As far as the other options go…let us know your tail width @12" and I can and maybe someone else can give some advice.

tail is about 13 -14" (not at board, going off of memory)

Thruster is my least wanted setup. Already have a couple of them. Thanks for reply, I was surprised no one commented, thought i was not part of the club anymore.

Hey Araq.

I agree with ‘insane’ that 1/4 is too much toe, I’d go somewhere between Zero and 1/8.

Your tail width is fine, I like a big fat tail on these and find that anything around the 13’ mark works best.

You might want to consider going a bit smaller, 6’2 seems a bit big for a Mini Simmons.

My rule has been 5 inches shorter than the rider, so if you are 6’7" then the board id perfect.

One more thing, don’t overfin the board—two fins is plenty and you’ll find yourself using the rails a lot on these boards.

You might want to consider a twinzer setup—see this post for talk about a twinzer on a Mini or maybe even a twin with a trailer fin.

Have Fun bro.

I’ve been riding a quad set up on my little hybrid. This has been working so good.

i took a pic for you.

the measurements are when marking out your fins, the toe-in is 1/4". the center fin is 3 3/8".[img_assist|nid=1069481|title=5 fin|desc=|link=none|align=left|width=640|height=480]

Thanks Mini & Tsticks!!
