Beautiful, as usual. All flat bottoms? And fin placement. From your posts and the audio off the web, I gather you place the fins as far out on the rail as possible? Can you talk about that? thanks.
On my twins i use a pretty low rocker and get the realese from the loss of area from the template pulling in from center. The single fin on the rail gives a feeling of rocker and its low rocker measurement gives it glide and drive.
In the end of the board and fin design you get a board that flies on a single axis that can pivot in any direction with no resistance from another fin.
The are flat in the shape but the rail laps make them slightly concave.
I put my fronts at 1 1/8 in
And the rears about 15/16" - 1" in
The narrowing tips allow these fins to roll into the turns even though they are close to the rail and you really only feel the bases close to the bottom feeling like part of the board and not some apendage below the board.
Are you setting the rear quad fins more upright and with less toe than the front fins? I ask because this is the generalisation that comes through in the archives but you mentioned somewhere about the tendancy of there to be a ‘tension’ between the front and rear fins with quads (‘good for control’). Are you doing anything different given that your rear fins are nearer the rail than the front and your own template.
Thanks for the shots and explaining some of your fin placements. I have been inspired to put the 5 fin option on my last 2 boards and 5 has been the best combo yet.
Hey greg thanks for the help on fin placement on previous quads ive shaped. I have a couple of questions, what is the fin place ment on the 5’7 quad fish, Toe in, Fin cant, fin placement. Also Heres a question about fin placement, What changes when you move your rear quad fin placement more towards the rail, verses the stringer. I see the stretch boards with the rear quads more toward the center, I thought the purpose for the quad was to create less drag and get rid of the center fin that is creating alot of the drag. Now wouldn’t the fin placement more towards the center of the board be creating more drag? Sorry if it sounds like im rambling so many questions and typing off the top of my head-thanks
A center fin does not drag as many say , its just not as active as a fin on the rail.
Fins only drag going straight to shore in surfing and thats not to often. They create and capture the energy of the wave the rest of the time and i think we should keep using them. Placing the fins off the rail would make it easier to press on the rail and possibly a smoother but not as electric of a ride.
