Not a riviting question…but I have a 5gal bucket of UV sanding resin that dries up tacky. I am assuming that the wax has moved onto bigger and better things at the bottom of the bucket and is no longer interested in playing nicely.
I use only 3-4 oz of resin at a time since I make wooden surfboard fins with this stuff. No it was not my intention to buy 5gallons but a mistake in the ordering process resulted in 3 lifetimes worth of this goop.
What do you guys and gals out there do to keep the wax mixed in a large bucket? I would like to use a pumper but my concern is that my ratio of wax to resin will be off if I don’t mix it routinely. Yes, I have picked up the resin and shook it like my kids do the presents on Christmas. No worky.
Yes, i am using it properly and I have been using the 5gal SR to mix small batches. What I am after is a way to walk into my shed, pump out some SR out of the 5gal bucket and have it work.
Being you have 5 gals of “sanding” resin. Try catalyzing a small batch a little hot. And see how it cures if you get that waxy look and it sets up hard, guess what?
One question why 5 gallons? Just get the UV lam resin and add “surfacing agent”.
Or is there a reason? No harm no foul and nothing bad from me.
Me? always go 5 gal UV lam, SA & MEKP. Thank God for UV cure as laminations on 10 ft. boards can be done solo and 5-7’s a breeze.
I always put one drop of MEKP in the lam resin to make sure especially if it’s night and there going under the lights.
The “filler, sanding or hot coat” should be catalyzed IMO.
Anybody know how the UV stuff ages? Bad experience in the bygone days of 55 gal drums and getting stuck with old crap that had to have tinted it was so funky.
I have used UV since 1993 or 4. If you let it sit ; yes it will settle and thicken. You’ll have to put the 5 gallon can on a shaker. Maybe you can give someone a fiver$$ at a paint store to put it on a shaker for you. Otherwise pour the resin off and leave the UV agent in the bottom of the cam. Add more UV powder to small batches or catalyze. It can be thinned if it is too thick to use. Buy it from me next time and I won’t sell you a 5 when all you needed was a gallon. Also; always better to buy regular 249 lam and add UV powder to each batch used. Gives you more options. Lowel
