5th board exp

well i finally got goin after collecting thoughts at museums, here, ksusa, and mostly the water surfing just about every proven craft and kind of threw some ideas together. Earlier this week I did my first ever full rail roundhouse (i mean full on wrap around to floater all rail and a bit o fin to recover to keep goin for 50 yds) on my 6-10 liddle smoothie…way more difficult -need to be in the perfect spot on board and wave- to do than a standard shortboard…something that is really burnt in my brain right now!

this board is 5-5 x 22.25

4.5 inches nose rocker all in front third, rear 2/3rds dead flat.

resin research epox — bottom lamination is pre-meditated strips and staggered layers of 4 oz s- glass

the deck and topside of the rails are mostly 4 oz carbon to deal with compression stresses with some s thrown here and there

The bottom shell was made with: 2 full layers full 4 oz s, then 1 rear 3/4 board, then one rear half, then 2 laters flat oval kind of as a base for where the balsa spine bump is then 2 more even narrower ‘cigars’ even more centered where the center bump is. (all 4 oz s)

Then 8lb pour foam in rails with 36" 1/8" thick balsa stringers suspended in the foam (rear 2/3rds of board) of each rail.

Deck lam is 1 layer s just rear 2/3rds board each rail couple inches wide where foam meets bottom lam, then 4 layers carbon same width same place but all shortening in succession

down to just cover where the foam ends into laminate 6 inches up from the tail. Then some more reinforcement on the spine then a 3/4 full layer of s and 2 full layers of carb and thats it.

6 lbs

Wow look at that flat spot in the deck side left rail! When doin laborious madness such as grinding the too much poured pour foam I go into a frenzy of “good enough” sorry! well the water wont be riding the deck anyway and i could probably twist it to look right and take a photo haha just another test board anyway damn i need more patience sometimes

The finish, as all my shapes are, is lump and bump, but the big picture is there. The entry is only 4-6 layers thick (it transitions thicker rearward) so you get the variable single concave entry like ‘flexspoons’ old greeno edge. It actually ‘pops’

Then the spine is stiff and the rails are stiff, but in between the two its only like 6-8 layers thick but tapered between so it doesnt rocker nose to tail, but TWIST and I mean serious twist. The hulled rails actually twist up and around where your knee to ankle portion of leg will be. As well as like diagonal halfboard twist from spine to rail nose to tail Like if you tug on the rail only a foot from the tail, the twist effect goes all the way to the nose, you can see it tweak thru the variable concave entry…so I am stoked on the insanely complex lam schedule.

The funny thing is it may not even work good! still have to make fins and touch up release edge on bottom/sand

there are some warbles from the pour foam, but it will be interesting for sure, it has WAY more hull (but edged with inner hull running double concave all the way) but WAY more twist tweak flex than my first spoon, and 3 lbs less too. But it feels totally strong because of the rails and spine/better ingredients.

so i will post more pics/how it rides if i ever can finish the damned thing. thanks as always to everyone who ever has been stoked on messin with surfcrafts of all kind here and everywhere for sharing ideas etc

looks great, what’s your fin plan?

Makes me want to build one too… Dang it I have too many projects already!

Keep us posted on the progress!

thanks Run !!

good to hear from you …

you must have a bit of a quiver of these now ?

ben

hi keith for fins I am hoping I stay stoked enough to really try a bunch of different setups/placements eventually - but probly just start with the quad setup i’ve been using, the difference being adding about a half inch of area all the way around each fin to compensate for the added flex/twist this board will have. panel will be about 20 layers s with 10 layers carbon in middle all 4 oz epox

I still have the male mold which is a pretty damn clean shape way cleaner than this board which came from it- the rocker, edge and rails came out pretty good so if this shape goes good i can make a female mold off of the male mold with some real thick boat glass mat and polyester or something then when I lay the next one in that it will really have a sturdy base/mold to hold its shape while messing with the stringers/pour foam/lam goin off possible heat/expansion warble. Hopefully in a couple years after really deciding on the best fin setup for me i can make a real clean one

Good ole chip no just the second one well maybe second and a half cuz i f-ed one up a while ago half way before it ever got in the water clark foam blank couldnt handle super thin taper in rails with my then inadequate knowledge of lam support but its amazing to see how thin and flexy this one is, but still being structurally sound (it seems) compared to that first brick i made - but i didnt know at the time you know? who knows how this one will go it will be fun to get it in some firing waves though and find out

as far as making one its really not that expensive or difficult if u think of the big picture and how much stoke/learning you’re going to get out of it. In fact there’s been people more kind and patient than me to really share their ideas/tips over at flexspoon.com and ksusa and here of course

i think thats one of the coolest things about flexspoons and why (to me) they embody the true spirit of surfing. They really take the business end/social scene right out -throw it right out the f-ing door you know? No time for that bullshit.

With the boards there is no end design you have to follow. Whatever you want for YOU. There hardly is anyone that’ll make you one. Theres hardly any footage of style to emulate - you have a lot more of your own trip to follow.

There are exceptions though! I once saw a guy who surfed good paddle out alone with a smile on a standard merrick thruster at some shifty desolate long period 8-10’ beachie so the person always overrides the board I guess!

take care all
