6 + 4 Lamination

I always seem to fight with getting the air bubbles out when laminating a 6 + 4 deck.  I do 6 on the bottom and 4 on top.  Should I reverse and do 4 on the bottom and 6 on top?   Any tips.

6 on top is easier to wet out as the 6oz with have more space between the weave for the resin to go through.i like to keep the 4oz on top though as it gives a better hotcoat.just have to work the lamination a bit more.

Push the resin in front of the squeegee. Don’t scrape. Listen, there’s a sound like mini popcorn that tells you there is not enough resin between the board and your squeegee. Do a fill coat at the end.

I had lot’s of little bubbles in my last lam so maybe someone else has better advice.

Hi Mako! Are you using epoxy? I only ask, because I was having similar trouble when laminating in low temperatures (about 18 deg C). Its been a god awful UK summer so been doing a lot of lams with the heater going in the workshop for 6 hours before I cook something up.

I take it you’re using PU blanks and not EPS. If EPS, lam in decreasing room temperature to avoid out gassing (though this doesn’t sound like your problem).

My anecdotal experience is that 4 oz on the outside will require less fill coat.  If you are using epoxy, it wets out pretty easy anyway so the larger weave of 6 oz seems not to be an advantage.

Here is one for you.  I’ll bet you could use 3 layers of 4 oz and if properly lam’d (tight), you would come pretty close in weight to the 6/4 after fill coat.  If I could figure out a simple cheap way to measure, I would test it.  Maybe.  But it is far easier to sit here and speculate.  ha.

i always put the 6oz on the outside, for the reasons mentioned - wets out easier, less air, less fuzz when pulling the laps tight.

like the popcorn comment, pretty accurate. It should sound like a plastic zipper when wet

4 oz under . then no air in the weave

Gonna try the 4oz under, got the same problem last time i did one, albeit its only my 4 th glass job! But im gettin the hang of it , LOL
