Im waiting on some glass and resin to finish off my fishy twinny, and im doing a 6+4oz deck. Im thinking of wrapping the 6oz, and having the 4oz as a full length patch, just so the rails have a little more glass on them.
On a 3 x 4oz deck layup, trim the first layer @ rail apex, next one approx 1/2 inch past rail apex, and the last one a full 1 1/2 inch lap. I’m looking for maximun strength, on the rail. This is my choice. Perhaps not for everyone.
Howzit Bill, I was taught to cut the first layer along the tuck line of the rail which adds even mor strength, that way the glas covers the entire rail.Aloha,Kokua
Thanks daren, im using uv cured poly, so i should have enough time to wet out properly, and get rid of bubbles. Im out of the water til the 10th of jan, and i just ordered the glass and resin, so im hoping my first surf back might be on my new board.
Or, maybe i might put the 6oz on the bottom, but bring it right out over to the rail apex, so i still get strength on the top of the rail, but im wrapping the 4oz, like bill does. I suppose it wont make a huge difference, im not surfing reefs, and im not hard on my boards.
Are you still doing the eps/xps/epoxy boards from shapers??. If so, how are they going, and how do they compare strength and weight wise to a poly of the same dimension and glass job. If i make myself an 8’er, or similar, i like the idea of having a strong glass job, but without being too heavy.
Yep still building a few XPS and EPS boards. The one I’m riding at the moment is holding up extremely well, hardly any dents in the deck and it only has a single 4oz. Super light at around 5lb. real lively board as well.
I’ve also got a couple of young kids around here ripping on them as well. Young Tommy Hill is riding a stringerless EPS and he’s blowing up.
The strength and weight of the XPS just doesn’t compare with poly and the boards still feel great under your feet. Just a pain in the arse to shape.
What a waste of a thread!, i got the stuff this morning, and its all 4oz!!. Im not sure if they didnt think i’d notice, but i checked it, and yep, its all 4oz. I looked at both lots ( i ordered 4 and 6 ) and they are the same. To make sure, i went through my shed and found my two plastic bags of offcuts of 4 and 6oz from a different supplier. You can see the difference easily when put side by side. I checked my old 6oz scrap against both lots of new stuff, and its definately not 6oz.
Oh, well, lucky i have light longboard foam that’s only had the crust sanded off, top and bottom. I’ll send them an email, not a nasty one, just to let them know i know.
P.S on my recent resin swirl experiments, i’ve been using scrap 6oz on the bottom of my now dead ( stripped ) 2+1. Anyway, out of curiosity, i punched the single 6oz sample, to see how it holds up. I didn’t wind up and kinghit it, but gave it a solid short punch. Holds up very well, only a small shallow compression. Good stuff that 6oz.
EDIT I just checked, and i was given more UV catalyst/additive than i ordered ( double ), so, i guess im square?. Still doesnt really help me, but, i dont wanna send stuff back and have to wait. No big deal, i guess i’ll have a super light twinny. Hmmm, maybe i might do a “cheater coat” of just coloured resin to add a bit more weight back.
I always wrap my 6oz, and I cut the 4oz right to the bottom edge of the rail…not the top edge. Don’t know how everybody else does it, it’s the way I learned. Seems like you would want the stronger glass wrapping the rail. I always do no less than a 2 1/2 lap and usually quite a bit more for strength.
