[kitesurfer] …" who’s Roy ? "

p.s. - that IS a nice looking board , by the way ! …single fin ?? [it looks a bit like the 1970s ‘teardrop’ board in the "surfboard design and construction " file , too] .
Roy’s A wooden surfboard builder, you can find him in the archives or at woodensurfboardbuilder.com he has some awsome designs. i haven’t weighed my board yet, but i think its around 12lbs or so. its going to be a single fin and i was going for a retro shape. i still haven’t decided on a fin- any suggestions?
That’s pretty sick (tight) . . . awesome man! I’ve been doing a search for balsa related shaping . . . I’m leaning towards balsa chambers or paul jensen’s but for now just doing research on this dope (cool) forum . … Ever since I got into surfing 6 mo’s ago, I’m just hooked on it. I was an avid video game player but sold my consoles for an Harbour Hp1 and SR . . . Now I’m learning more about my equipment … . . I prob won’t worry about that so much when I get close to ‘he’s rips on a barndoor’ level.
Couple ?'s I know Roy’s pretty cool, but saw a couple posts on how he charges for plans. How much were they? On a scale of 1-10 (1 being logging in, clicking on Merrick Flyer, then hitting Enter for the KKL machine, 5 handling a planer and getting a good shape, 8 being chambered balsa, 10 being jensen-esque hollow) how challenging was this? Did you have to bust out with bricks, mortars, machine guns (haha) like in Roy’s James board post?
What tools did you have to gather up for this? Did you have dry the balsa a year?
Last on, I saw the frame work, but did you use single balsa sheet (one for top or bottom) to cover it or was it strips glued together over it?
Cool. Thanks ahead o time.
For fins,
you can try tuna fish style shaped fins, since I’ve seen 70’s tear drop boards come with them
Tuna
I have a Harbour 7’6" SR (retro egg shape) but it can be ridden single fin or 2+1. As a single, this fin has excellent drive, hold, and smooth turns. It works in steep hollow faces (so far in 5 ft) and in mush . . . My Hp 1 fin is shaped the same way . . . that thing just is great.
Also I’ve heard hatchet fins are good. Are you going to put in a fin box or glass on? A fin box gives options . . . Some guys say a board that’s a dog suddenly gets to a hair of magic just by swapping the fin(s). Or a magic board becomes magic X infinity. Disclaimer: not sayin anything about you, your board will surf great, it’s pretty clean and nice shape in the pics . … SR
i actually made my own plans with roys help, he told me what to and i made the measurments. as far as dificulty, it mainly comes down to having patiance and improvising when unexpected detours arise. i proably have a couple hundred hours put into this thing, but im pretty anal. so i wouldnt say it was dificult but i have a general knowlege of woodworking and dont see it as being dificult, but is was a chalenge. Tools- to build the blank i used my schools woodroom using table saws and chopsaws to mill my lumber( 2 sticks 8’x 7.5"x3.25" cut into 1/2"x3.25"x 8’) . then a combo of barclamps and handscrew clamps to put everything together. after the 4 panels were glued up i had to level them out with an electric hand plane- $45- $150 and a series of hand planes $10 - $50 after all surfeces were flat i glued the 4 panels up on a rocker jig to glue and warp the rocker in. after that i cut the planeshape out with a hand saw and began shaping with my electric hand plane and then used the hand planes and then sanding. (i have a full set of plans that im working on with step by step instructions if your intrested) ill just let the pics talk for me…
on second thought, i have 20 or so photos on Word if you want me to email them to you- my plans are not fully completed but i can email you what i have and give you the rest later- after i glass it-just send me an email.
I want to tell you all, Austin has an eye for this. He came to me with the wood, his tools and asked for a little advise.
I sent him back to the store with the planer, it was cutting deep on zero cut. He came back with a glued up blank and a wiggly outline, I trued up one side and showed him how to turn one rail. Last week he came back again with the finished board, for a first, wooden board to boot, he has done such a great job, no bumps, clean sand job.
All the advise paid off, he came back with his Mom and a big ol’ cheesecake for me. Hey Austin, your Mom is such a doll too!!! Your welcome around my shaping room anytime!
Thanks Jim. I really appreacate all of the help I have been getting from you, there’s no telling what my board would have looked like if you never invited me over to your workshop and showed me how to use the handplane. Did thoes Resin Reasearch guys drop by yet?
Here is the orignal Heart Series 6’1" - shaped by Roy Stewart-that mine was modeled after.
Thanks for walking me through the process if your out there Roy, I wouldn’t of ever got this far without your help.
theres a little bit of diffrence in the plane shape, but its all the same on the inside.
Sweet. Thanks let me know when the word doc and plans are finished … I’m still scoping out the archives for balsa related stuff . . . want to learn as much as I can before I start asking ?'s and getting tools
Hehe free Roy . . . so that means Roy can’t post here? I thought I saw his posts somewhere?
After months of delay I am almost done! I just mounted my fin with the help of Jim Phillips and all thats left to do is whatever you do after this So hopefully I’ll be in the water shortly. This is my greatest achievment in life so far, at least I think so…
