7-0 Surf SUP

Decided to slap this together.  Shaped it out and installed boxes then bagged on deck sandwich.

Vacuum crushed the foam. Good thing I went out to garage and checked it because it had started to fold up end to end. Guess I needed a rocker board…

Try to save it with some balloon spackle

Hello TomW059-

I like your multi-use workspace. It looks like you have been busy with all the blanks.

How did you do the deck patch (foam type and thickness)? Is there fiberglass cloth underneath it as well?

It’s 3mm 80 kg / m3 corecell with 7 oz glass under it.

Wish I had built shaping bay and glassing space instead of general garage.

I daydream about a righteous shaping shed…and then I rationalize that making 2 boards a year is not enough to warrant a dedicated space. But if I had a dedicated space, would I make more and or better boards?!?

Thanks for the sandwich information. I hope the rest of the build goes well.

The blank got crushed and deformed by the vacuum.  I think I have to scrap it. Tried to patch it up with micro balloon mix, but it’s pretty lumpy.

Too bad Tom. I hope the next one goes better.

i made the same mistake the first time, you only want about 8in/mg or you will crush most eps blanks and even then i would advise using a rocker stick of some kind. I just did a cork kite board and just hot wired a 5" wide eps roocker stick i used under the blank on the table while it was under vac.

The other thing i would say is you never want the vac port on top of your work pice, use a layer or two of breather and make a path away from the blank and set your port on there that way you will lot leave any marks on the work pice.

Dont be put off you are 90% there!

Hi Charlie,

Yes, a total mess. understand what i did wrong.  looking at the blank while shaping some kite surfboards from machined blanks, i realize the internal structure has been crushed too. There are big deformations.

just gonna cut it up and wait until next year- have to finish 5 kiteboards…
