Hi there i am a complete rookie at shaping i live in germany so far far away from any pros and am had the urge to try my hand at shaping after spending the last years studying online…
I know i have a long ways to go but i did shape an 8’0 longboard, a 6’3 shortboard retro outline and a 5’3 fish (retro outline) all by and for myself out of fun and curiosity.
Now i still have a 7’4 blank waiting for me and thought that a 7’0 egg shape (outline by blending curves) would be nice.
Board is meant for small/medium waves in Portugal and some cruising.
Current plan for dimensions is
7’0 length
21,5" wide
2 6/8" thickness
Single + 2 futures fins
Now on to my question:
What rocker would you guys recommend for the fin setup i gather that flat rocker would be best for turning the single fin, bit does it compromise maneuverability when using the board in twin config?
What bottom contour goes well with given rocker? I thought flat to vee in the tail
And what rail would a pro put on such a board? 50/50? 60/40? If anyone has answers for me i’d be so grateful because i’m still at the very beginning and each and every read brings me closer to understanding what the boards will do in the water…
Sadly i can’t test my designs regularly and therefore can’t really improve on them or find out what works…
Bottom; slight belly for paddling at shoulders and chest position running to flat and then slight “V” through the fin box and out the tail 10 or 12 inches. Soft 60/40 or 50/50 either will work. Go with whichever you are already used to. So many of today’s young surfers can’t surf a 50/50. Harden the last 14 or 12” of the tail rail. It’s an Egg. It will be surfed off the tail, with an occasional step forward shifting weight for speed through sections. Upturn or 50/50 the rail through the nose. What rocker is the blank you have? Natural rocker in an Arctic 7’8” E or Millennium 7’9” P works. The Natural rocker in most Egg blanks is satisfactory and needs little or no adjustment.
First of all thanks alot for the very helpful answer i’ll go for the mentioned dimensions since they are reasonable and about what i read before in other summaries of the “classical egg” shape.
The blank i have is similar to an arctic foam but by viral surf a local french supplier
I believe from what little info i gathered and what i measured off the blank that the rocker of it should suffice but an evaluation from a pro would be nice for sure.
Last question would be where to place the single fin from the tail of the board? I don’t know the usual dimensions and wanted to use the thread before going on a witch hunt without the right results for my purposes.
Thanks a lot in advance
Without a look at the template, my thinking is 5”, 5 1/2”, or 6” to the rear of a 10 1/2” fin box. Set the box on the finished shape and eyeball it. The 10 1/2” box will give you plenty of forward play. So chances are 5 or 5 1/2” is likely. Once you decide the center box, sidebites are pretty easy. Somewhere between 15 1/2” to 17” off the tail block.
That makes sense thanks a lot , sorry if my questions are a bit specific but i don’t have any empirical values for measurement or estimation and sadly can’t go to a local shaper or surfshop to compare
