70's Surfboard Restoration

Hi All,

I recently decided to attempt to restore my uncles board that he brought back from the Canary Islands in the 70’s and wanted some thoughts.

I already sanded off the old gloss coat (which was yellowed beyond belief), but now I am looking for advice on how to approach fixing some of the damage:

  • The fin layers are starting to delaminate. Should I just reglass it as if I was glassing in a new single fin? How far beyond the base of the fin should I extend any new glass? Should I try to reglue the delaminating plys together first?

  • There’s some small dents in the glass, what is the best way to fill these?

  • There’s exposed glass and old badly done repairs on the tail and nose. Any advice on how to colour match these to the rest of the board? Any specific paint I should be using?

(Swaylocks only lets me post one photo for now, so hopefully I will be able to add photos of the specific damage moving forward.)

Looking forward to hearing some cool ideas!
Cheers!

It seems nobody is around this weekend.
Unfortunately, I’m usually no help for restorations.
However, if I make a new post, does this allow you to post another picture?
If so, post a photo of the fin issues.

People are around. They just don’t want to comment. It’s a poor picture. Can’t see any details of damage. As boards go it is nothing special and not worth any detailed restoration. Patch the dings and call it good. I wouldn’t bother with color matching or anything more complex than getting it watertight. My estimation is it wouldn’t even be a good rider. That’s about it for my cool idea. So I started it, now watch the comments flood in.

As a new poster, apparently he is limited to one photo. Not being a restoration pro, I suspect the OP doesn’t know what type of photos are needed. I’ve seen lots of input posted for boards with less potential than this one.
I get the feeling this is a nostalgic restoration of a board once owned by a relative. I could be wrong.

Yes nostalgic.

Thanks for seeing the vision!
Here is a photo of the fin damage, which is what i am most unsure of how to tackle:
The individual plys of the fin are coming apart (hopefully that is clear in the picture), and I am not sure what the correct way forward is.

Thanks for the help!

That gives a better idea about the fin.
Maybe a few more photos of the fin and some the most significant other problems.

Take a Dremel or Die Grinder to it and cut the Ply fin off. Install a new fin of your choice. Another Ply fin would be easy and historical. You can buy a 2x2’ pieces at Home Depot. The alternative is to squirt glue down into the gaps between layers and clamp layers back together. This alternative is fraught with problems. Save yourself a headache. Put a new one on.
