i’m trying to design the rocker of my board out in the aps3000 program. it’s going to be a 7’3 egg shape (16 7/8" x 21 7/8" x 15"). it’s being hotwired out of a 4" slab of foam that i glued up out of 2" sheets. what is the best rocker i can make out of this board? i surf a lot of beachbreak mostly, some point here and there. i’m fairly new at this program so i’m not sure how to toggle the markers to keep a fluid thickness and rocker and still make it so the rocker template i make will fit the 4" thick foam slab. any help would be greatly appreciated!
i attached a .brd file of my outline so far, just in case anyone wants to toy with the rocker and repost. that would be awesome.
4" isn’t thick enough to get the kind of rocker I’d want in it but there may be some guys out there that know some tricks so you can get it. What I’m saying is that 2" or tail rocker and 4" of nose rocker are about minimal IMHO. I may be wrong but in order to get that you’d need a slab of foam 6"+.
Or you could cut it into 1" thick sheets and glue them together while bent into the rocker that you are going to want in the end. Then you’d have the bottom rocker you wanted and could hotwire or plane down the top to get the foil you want.
Just shape in as much rocker as you can & to your thickness. Once its shaped, you can easily ben in a couple more inches of rocker - especially late at either end - when you’re gluing in the stringer or laminating on the skins.
i did bend in a little rocker when i did the glue up, so that should help me a bit. i forgot to mention that before. i’m still having difficulty working out the best rocker. i’m thinking something in the 3" nose, 2.25" tail? if someone out there has an egg shape in the 7’ range and could post some dimensions of rocker…or point me to some, that would be extremely helpful. my aps3000 skills are still lacking. cheers!
This board is a 7’5" egg. It’s fairly close to what I think you’re shooting for. I shaped this one myself and it’s lots of fun in waves from waist to head high. I ride single and with a set-up similar to the one in the foot on with a little more bite on the rail fins.
thanks for the photos of that board. looks good. i think i’ve got a rocker figured out. one question right now though…for anyone out there. i’ve searched the archives and to no avail…is there any other way to cut the length of the foam (24") to place a stringer in besides using a band saw? i only have a little bandsaw, not wide enough to take the whole thing of foam. any other options to get a nice clean straight cut?
