757 keel fin?

I’ve tried searching for 757 fins, straight keels, and any other description, but can’t seem to dredge up anything from the archives on here about this…

keel

Been riding straight, plane wing style fins in my longboard for a while now, and played around with the 757 fins from  Lokbox, but anyone tried it as a keel? I’m sure someone has done it, but can’t seem to find any info…

I’m guessing it will be fast, with plenty of release, but wonder about holding ability?

thoughts,or any search ideas?

Buzzy Trent favored a similar fin.    Somewhat of a cross between an F-4 Phantom tailfin, and a shortened B-52 tailfin.   Used it on big wave guns.

I’ve got a similar template that blakestah sent me a long time ago. Much higher aspect ratio though.

I use them as rear fins in a quad setup. I’ll try and dig up the relevant thread.

Some quick searching turned up this:

Edit #2: Another relevant find, check out the wing rakes added to the 767 that reduct tip vortices (and drag):

Still not what I was looking for but relevant. I’ll keep digging…

thanks for the replies.

I’m thinking about doing a set for a keel fish that i’m making at the moment. 6 1/2 base, 5ish deep. The ones i’ve tried before were the quad set for Lokbox, which were indeed fast, and quite responsive. I’m just wondering how it would translate to a lower aspect fin.

I’ve already laid up the fin panel, and will probably just make them anyway, but just wondered if anyone else was riding/trying/tried similar. I know its not a new idea, but what the hell right…?

No experience with low-aspect fins like this. You’ve got the right idea though, just try it and see how it works and go from there.

Post some pics and let us know how it goes.

Based on that 767 wing and the improvements of a raked tip, might be
worth trying something like this to keep the flow attached at the tip
and reduce drag caused by vortices coming off the flat end.

hi rob - surf any good sun eve? I trekked back late that afternoon cos the wind was killing it.

the template doesnt look a million miles from a slantback so I’m sure it would work

but- just echoing what I was saying the other day - with a foil of that low aspect ratio you might have a greater problem with wingtip vortices than more conventional fins- due to the high/low pressure areas leaking over the large flat tip and causing more drag (more of an issue the stubbier you make the fin) - it’d be easy to try out the fin with a flat tip and then experiment with raked tip/angled winglet to see if that takes the fin in the direction you want to surf it.
