8'4" glass weight

I’m having a mini longboard shaped. The glasser suggested 6oz. bottom and 6oz top. Adding that the board would have good “flex” to it. I’m 6’ 180 lbs., do you think the deck will be strong enough and what would be any advantages or disadvantages? Thanks

Deck, full 6 with 3/4 6 patch and tail patch of 4. You won’t be kneepaddling that puppy, so that’s plenty.

I usually do 6+4 on the deck for anything like that. With only a single layer of 6 the board won’t be as durable.

Thanks for the reply. I was thinking a single 6oz. layer would be kind of light. Probably pressure ding real easy. I just don’t want it to break in half!

There are 2 trains of thought really - glassed light or glassed to last.

  • The glassed light option is 4oz or 6oz on top and bottom. The glassed light option keeps the weight of the overall board down and is prefered for high performance boards.

  • The glassed to last option is usually 1 layer of 4oz 0r 6oz on the bottom and multiple layers on top. This provides additional strength (and weight) as the part of your board that cops the most of a beating through normal use is the deck (top) due to knees, feet, etc. impacting with the board. Lee mentioned one option where deck patches are applied to the areas where the glasser / shaper feels additional strength is required. Another option is to apply 2 layers on the entire deck.

Both options have their merrits, but from the sounds of your board and assuming you want to hand onto it for a while, I’d suggest glassed to last.

Sorry for taking 2 posts to get my message across - I should review better.

I meant - assuming you want to HANG onto the board for a while, I’d suggest the glassed to last option.

Both options suggested above a.) Deck patches or b.) 1 layer 6oz, 1 layer 4oz are good options. Speak to the glasser and tell him what you want and I’m sure he’ll be able to give you what you want. When you’re paying good money for a custom board, make sure you get what you want… it’s just a matter of communication

PS: Glass to last option isn’t too much additional effort for the glasser, just uses more materials.
