9'6 Noserider

Hi all. I’ve watched this forum for quite a while, but didn’t start posting until recently. I’ve been looking through the archives trying to piece together a traditional noserider for small pointbreak surf and this is what I came up with: 9’6 x 18 7/8 x 23 x 16 1/4 x 3 1/4 with a slight concave in the nose to flat to slight v in the tail, 7" wide square tail, 3 3/4 nose rocker and 4 1/2 tail rocker, 50/50ish rails throughout, and a fat skeg. It’s going to be a HWS. Attached is the .brd file… Am I on the right track? How can I improve the design? I weight 140ish and am just under 6ft. Thanks

Best wishes,

At your size and weight, that’s a lot of board. Would you consider scaling the whole thing down to maybe a 9’2 or 9’4?

Ok sure. What dimensions would you recomend?

I know absolutely nothing about HWS…but I’d be thinking something like 9’2 or 9’4… and maybe 18x22.75x15.5x3.

I like the concave to flat to vee bottom (I like rolled vee in my noseriders) and 50/50 rails, but I like a more raked fin with a medium tip. I assume you want a sweet looking wooden skeg, and I get that. But in terms of performance, you might want to think about making a fiberglass fin…tinted or inlayed or something…that will ride better.

Ok cool thanks for the info. I keep hearing about how rocker’s what matters in a noserider… so what’s a good amount?

What do you mean by it’ll ride better if I used a fiberglass fin (in contrast to a large skeg)? It’ll turn better? Noserider better? I’m thinking about adding a finbox to give myself some more options… I already have a 8’6 high performance longboard that turns really well and noserides ok, but it doesn’t really start working till it’s about waist high. I want a board for surfing some of the smaller days (waist and under) in mushy/lined up pointbreak surf. Thanks for all your help I appreciate it. I attached a new version with the deminsions you gave…

I respectfully disagree with NJ Surfer and say at your size for a nose rider 9’6" is perfect. I was smaller than you when I ordered an first rode my bing and I could drop knee cutback and do faded bottom turns fine, in addition, I could also make minute adjustments while on the nose to maintain trim. if anything a hair more tail rocker to make it turn better and hang in the pocket better when you are styling out on the tip.

Thanks for your response. What dimensions would you recomend? What should I change in my 9’6 design? Rocker/bottom countrours ect…

I should also add, I plan to surf this board for many many years to come and don’t seem to stop growing anytime soon.

Hey Tim - I’m by no means an expert as I only have about 20 boards under my belt however after much research on this AWSOME forum I have reached many conclusions on what works for me and the types of waves I surf. I think you are spot on with your stated plan. My only suggestion would be to go with a 3" thickness as opposed to 3.25" I’m 175lbs to your 140lbs and have recenly scaled down from 3.25 to 3". My local waves are 1-3’ and pretty week and have landed on your exact dims for my NR’r. The concave and extra tail kick will help your efforts on the nose. Make sure the tail is a nice and pinched 50/50 to allow the wave/water to properly come over the rails to create the lift in the nose. I always like the look of a nice bevel or chine in the under side of the nose. Gonna try that on my next one. 23" width is perfect and should fit under your arm nicely with the pinched rails. Maybe think of glassing with Volan to give it just a tad of old skool weight and a classic look. I find the extra weight is needed for glide in small surf. Definately a 10.5" box for fin change outs. On really small days I put in a 10" pivot fin for stability when practicing NR’ing and if the waves creep up a bit I like to switch to a more raked out fin to facilitate arcy’r turns. Have fun with your decisions and let us know how it turned out.

Cheers!

Ok cool thanks for the response. I’m stoked I wasn’t way off! I’ll drop the thickness to 3" So am I right on the rocker profile? I know there should be kick in the tail but how much is too much? Anybody have any feedback on the 9’6 .brd? Being a HWS, there’s not much play in the rocker profile after the stringer is cut out. Thanks for all your help guys it’s so rad to have a place like this on the internet.

I dunno about cutting down thickness. but the bing noserider, which is awesome and I challenge anyone on here to dispute that things ability to nose ride, has 6 inches of tail rocker.

6"?? That seems like a lot to my (very) untrained eye? How much in the nose? You wouldn’t happen to have all the rocker info or a profile shot would you? I was just looking at the bing website and I was stoked to see my dimensions were pretty darn similar to the bing noserider/nr2.
