Enough to make you shed a tear…
Ohh yeah, that one’s All Done. Not enough left there for a decent doorstop
I’ll note that what isn’t shown is the 79 cent bungees he prolly used to hold said board to the racks. Oops. Whatcha might call a ‘false economy’ there. http://www.strapworks.com/Metal_Cam_Straps_p/cs112h.htm : for about five bucks he coulda avoided all this.
doc…

Uhm, I thought that looked like a good challenge for you ding repair guys…
Even a good strap doesn’t help if you’re a bit absent minded. I’ve forgotten to tie the board down… once. Luckily there was no big truck involved.
Doc,
You da man…you always come up with some great - and obscure - shit!!
Saw “Strapworks” years ago (you probably posted it) and was too dumb to log it to memory or Favorites. Thanks!
Great for that load from the lumber yard too…plus, any color and any length - cheap too…even the 1" is strong enough for most apps.
Also, as for doorstops…fins make great doorstops. Was in Costa Rica and the “Guanacastes” (serious offshores, for the uninitiated) kept blowing doors shut. A spare fin lying flat wedges neatly under the door - problem solved.
Thanks for the strap source.
Pete
Yeah…I have forgotten to tighten down the straps as well.
Fortunately for me there was juuuuuust enough grab between the bag and the strap to keep it from flying away.
I finally noticed something was wrong when I heard the board going “SLAP, thunk, SLAP, thunk” as it flapped up and down on my roof
driving along PCH.
YUP! That was me.
Hi Pete;
'Obscure ’ well, yeah, kinda reflects my personality.
And I remembered it 'cos I’ve done business with them, in my even more obscure guise as canvasworker/surf rack maker. The straps are great things, they are. Bungees or their all-rubber cousins are untrustworthy, ropes require knots that are easy to get wrong, but straps are great. Though I’ll note that the cheapos with the stamped metal or plastic hardware should be avoided. They tend to let go too.
Heh- there was the set of bar tops I once made in Panama, from a bunch of busted boards. Now, there’s a topic: what to do with a dead surfboard.
And Haavard, you know, it just occurred to me. That thing, now, is kinda like raw materials, if you were gonna make Surfboard Sausage, as it’s been ground up. Or one of those reconstructions of crashed airliners…
You’re right, even straps don’t work if you don’t use 'em. I had a lesser but similar repair once.
Lawyerette had bought herself a new board…and a set of straps-plus-pads to use on factory car racks. The pads velcroed around the racks, then you wrapped the straps around the racks and around the board. Strong system…if it was used right.
But…lawyerette couldn’t be bothered to read the directions. Velcroed the pads on, tightened the straps and set out to the beach, along a major urban expressway. With a 9’4" held on only by about enough velcro to make four good postage stamps.
The truck behind her was not amused. Nose got seriously munched.
She reloaded it, inside this time, and kept going to the beach. And paddled it around some, tried to ride it. Filled the nose full of wet beach sand.
And then I was not amused…
doc… ever more obscure…
