Alright remember these questions are coming from a newbie so please don’t be too harsh on me, I’m just a 15 year old kid trying to make my own board. First of all, with blanks, what is the difference between a super blue and a super light? And why is the bottom length different from the tip-to-tip length? Also, how close is too close when choosing blanks with a tip-to tip measurement and bottom length extremely close to desired length of the finished board…for example:6’3"H blank which has a tip-to-tip length of 6’4 1/8" for a 6’4" board, is that too close for error?? Thanks in advance!

Thanks in advance! Brandon, look in the geometry book and see that length is the shortest distance between two points. This is why the bottom length is longer than the tip to tip. Don’t rely on the figures being right, get a little extra foam, I shaped 2- 6’10"s for my pal to take to Hawaii out of 6’11"r dots. I had super thin nose and tails and still needed to thin the middles a whole lot more. At this stage of your desire to shape a board, my suggestion is to get a bit more foam and whittle away what you don’t need. It is better than not enough foam in the begining and even less in the end. Lots of luck, Jim.
Blue foam is stronger than Superlight foam but heavier. Tip to tip length is shorter than bottom length because when you measure the bottom the tape measure is following the rocker line which is longer than just a straight line. If you want to shape a 6-4 use a blank that’s a little longer for 2 reasons; you can move the template up or back a little to get the foil how you want it and also because sometimes the blank may be a little chewed up at the ends. Try the 6-7R . Good luck with your shaping!!!
