A good longboard???

I’ve got a small dellima! My wife bought me a blank for Christmas.Where is the problem you say? I have never shaped a longboard before. I’ve only surfed a longboard one time!!! Anyways it is a Clark foam 10’7’'H.What can I do with it? Can I make a board That turns Quicly and still offers some cool nose time? where could a guy get the specs for something like that.Me? I’m a intermediate skill surfer who now tips the scale @ over 200lbs.And 6 Feet 5 inches. Any thoughts??? Tanks Ronstafarrian

make a nice 10’4" log. keep it a little thinner in the nose and tail to make it lighter. maybe move the widepoint above center…it won’t be a very “loose” board…let us know how it comes out

Being this is your first board, I’d recommend just keeping the rails low and soft then hardening a bit in the last 18-24 inches toward the tail. Keep the bottom flat with a slight vee in the last third of the bottom. To me low rails are easier to shape, cutting the main rail band off the top mostly with a small band on the bottom for the tuck under rail. This is what I did on my first board and it rode pretty good. If youre gonna shape something in the 10 ft. range, I’d recommend a single fin. There are a lot of resources; books, videos available now, research them before starting and you’ll probably be pleasantly surprised when you take your board out for the first surf.

I’m wondering how she knew which blank to buy. That certainly wasn’t my wife. My wife thinks a blank is something you say infront of the kids to replace a foul word.

I just shaped a 10’7H. Not much rocker in that blank to begin with, so the shorter you make it the tighter it will get. That blank is a close tolerance blank that does not require all that much shaping especially for someone of your size. I’d say go no shorter that 10’4". take as much off the underside of the nose and tail as possible to create more rocker. Put a decent Vee in the tail. Keep the rails nuetral to maybe going a little down in the back third. The blank is fairly thick so you won;t have to take all that much off thebottom center so really concentrate on nose and tail undersides and that will also increase your rocker. Your best bet is to ask someone you know who has shaped some longboards before to come work on it with you. Good luck Drew

Take a look at a Yater 10’ 4" Surftech it has good long board shape and surfs well.

NO SURFTECH…BUY AMERICAN…espeically if your driving around in that SUV with the American Flag decal, watch a least one football game a weekend, drink Coors and love your ballpark frank…

Hey, I hate Shitechs like everyone else, but why put down on Ball Park franks? I realize they are all the same (pop outs), and they warp in the microwave, of course, but they are great! From the oven, the pot of boiling water, the grill, or even cold. Nothing beats a good Ball Park. I suppose you are one of those guys who is stuck in the sixties, only eating an Oscar Meyer. Heck, Kelly Slater should dump Quiksilver and get a good sponsorship deal with Ball Park. Have some respect for the wiener.

Fairmont – Monday, 15 December 2003, at 10:53 p.m. Hey, I hate Shitechs like everyone else, but why put down on Ball Park franks? no wonder that you brought your shaper / guru a 12 pack of shit beer!

Where are your clothes, shoes, rash guard, wet suits and stereos made? Let me know who makes a board which surfs as well and is as durable as a Yater 10’ 4" Surftech. The guy with the blank who wants to shape his own board could learn something by taking a look at one.
