I’m looking for a board, a longboard, that can handle big East Coast beach break. I prefer a more traditional style of longboarding and do not want a “high performance” model. I want to be able to noseride bigger/faster waves. I purchased a Jim Phillips( noserider) a few years back and I’ve never been happier! Does he make a speed model that will still noserides well?
“big East Coast beach break”
Define big. This could be your first problem

Yup, I shape all my personal performance longboards with pulled in noses and a less curvy tail, but with some width across the tip. I also do the Surfboards Hawaii speed shape, same board and yes, they still noseride well. Noseriding is a state of mind, not just foam and fiberglass
Yup, Court, I have one at my factory and in fact it might be for sale. I could post a photo in the classifieds.
It is a 10’3" hard square with red plastic tailblock. Triple stringer. No nose concave, just streamlined belly.
It is about 23" wide. It is 3-1/8" thick. It has an elliptical rail which indicates speed and cruising and not a lot of harsh manuevers. Slightly yellowed with a “South Coast Surfboards” logo, it is signed by Jim Phillips. Reminds me of a Phil Edwards or even a Hynson in overall shape/style.
I had a great gig going with South Coast, almost unlimited shaping for them. Robin Prodonavich kept me in raw foam, but “the glass shop” that I put them in was dragging their feet, taking months for simple work and just sticking it up Rob Ards butt on the pricing. It cost me a nice weekly pay check and South Coast a supply of anything I wanted to shape for them. I had one board with t-band offsets, but the balsa was riddled with termite galleries, I went to Playco and got a bag of big plastic ants, I placed them coming in and out of the holes in the wood with a little lam resin.
Dano called from the Newport Ave. showroom to tell me they had cutomers throwing wads of hundred dollar bills, out bidding one another for this board
Hey Jim you getting old?I can remember you catching fat Makaha Cockroaches for fin inlays. They ran like 100 miles an hour or something.
I’m pissed, I had a Maxwell coffee can chock full of lizards, frogs, giant roaches, scorpions, rhinosarus beetles, baby turtles, you name it, all in a bath of acetone. The knuckle dragger who recently got an ass chewing by Ms.Tudor for his knock-off, Nu’uihiwa noserider, tossed my stuff while I was in Hawaii. I for the life of me can’t figure why they can’t keep their inferior little paws off my stuff. They tossed 2 air conditioners also, I pay for my work space, leave my dead things alone. My genuine Makaha cock roach fins are holy grails of surfing lore
