A LOOK at what JOHN BELIK has coming UP!!

soulstice, Thought I would give you some pics of new Belik board ideas straight from the Islands. Mahalo,Larry

The one of the far left is how I like my fin placement on quads. More in the center with the rear fins.

Hi Larry

Can you comment on the cant that you find works best with the rear quads on perf shortboards? Also the diff in cant when you use a flat sided vs double foiled fin?

I know this has been covered previously but I also realize that more and more shapers are experimenting with quads and the evolution of the quad is still in its first stages.

Thanks

Cj

Hi Cj, It’s a toss up between 4 degree and 6 degree. 6 degree being the best at beach breaks.

Has for double foil verses half foil, in the quad world it seems that the 4 fins work best has a group. Half foils work the best for rail to rail movement with quick response. Double foil gives you more forward direction which guys like on their front side but makes the board hard to ride backside and recover out of a cutback. My choice is all fins half foil in Quad set ups.

Hope this helps, Thanks for asking the question. Mahalo, Larry

Thanks craftee, Always enjoy reading your posts. Mahalo,Larry

sako1, Thank you for your support. Must say you have a hell of a board collection. Thanks for sharing alittle of surfing history, always puts me in a day dreaming mode and takes me back. Keep up the Hawaiian Energy.

Mahalo,Larry

sako1, Thought I would share these Belik boards with a collection of other Hawaiian Fin designs from Hanalei Fins and Guy Takayama Fins. Mahalo, Larry

sako were you in the aiea in 72-74 or still downtown.

I used to visit Iggy’s shop alot back then when I was ordering all my customs from him.

All I remember was bobby owens I don’t remember alot of stuff in that shop except bobby and the counter but Iggy was far ahead of the guys at bolt and surfline even though they had prettier logos… Kind of like Craig sitting on a stool behind the counter in his little hole in the wall 10x10 store on the corner next to the monkey bar selling surf wax and shorts.

Belik reminds me alot of Christopher Lassen who was riding alot of those types of boards way back then with Mr. Spreckles and Reno.

Anyway FYI Greg makes all his custom G10 fins with small tabs so you can move his fins forward and back just a tad but enough to make a difference. You couldn’t do this without something like the g10 material.

Also the challenge with some of the other box designs like lokbox or probox is getting them small enough to stick way out on the rail in the tail where Greg likes to stick the rear three of his 5 fin designs. I think if the box guys can solve this problem Griffin would be more than happy to try some of these other options. So far only FCS plugs seems to be the smallest to stick way out on the rail like this…

If his design catches on like it has been, I’m sure the box manufacturers would see some value in getting their boxes to fit Greg’s 5fin design. But then the idea behind his boards is to not be messing around with the fins so much once you find the sweet spot.

good to see guys our age still with the shortboard stoke

Hi oneaula, I agree with some of the things you are stating. That is why ProBox has a small footprint of 4" and the unique outer wall shape to set close to the rail, which displaces strong lateral loads from big fins with a wide adjustment range to set your fins out to the rail. The main thing with individuals is they fight the change if it takes any thinking or more importantly dosen’t suit their needs. Then they make excusses instead of looking forward and figure a way out to make it work to better their surfing experience. No offense but a 1/16" of a inch in a fixed cant position is not fine tuning, but it is stating they are aware that adjustment is needed but they have limitations. So to me not having those limitations is what it’s all about, because that’s how you enjoy a new level of surfing experiences. Always nice to read your thoughts oneula. Mahalo,Larry

Mahalo Larry

Well I have three shaped 6’2" Griffin 5fin modern fishes at home to finish.

I was going to try some of the new FCS fusion plugs even though these aren’t EPS boards but maybe I’ll see if I can figure a way to use your proboxes in place of the FCS plugs. I just think the tail may be too thin on the rear rail where greg positions the sides of his back three fins but I will do my best to see if they can be used.

From this pic of my current board’s back fin placements do you this the proboxes will work on the back rail fins? Do I need to do something to the outside back part of the box?

Yep … Yep … Yep !!!

Likeing it mooooocho moooocho

High aspect profile set look a versitile arrangement

What’s your take on the twin fin set, any feedback yet ??? How do they compare to the twinzer twin set you have ??

Like to thank you for taking the trouble to post pic’s

I’m back in the land of the livin … I’ll email order thru to you …

Probox good value at current exchange rate … might get some extra’s

God bless

Hi oneula, Sorry it took me awhile to get back, but needed a FCS plug to help answer your question. Had another guy come in last week to do a retro fit to ProBoxes from FCS, so I keep a plug. Here are some pics showing the difference betwwen FCS and ProBox.

This pic shows a top view of the FCS plug on top of a ProBox. When you set the flat side of the FCS and ProBox together the space is between 3/16" and 1/4" gap to the outside of the ProBox. This pic shows a 1/8" resin around the plug on one side.

This pic shows the depth of a FCS and ProBox side by side to show the depth. The depth of the FCS is a 1/16" shorter than a ProBox.

So in answer to your question about the placement of ProBox, back position no problem. As for the rail I say 1" is close but do able if the rail line of the board isn’t to pinch.

This brings up another interesting thought that alot of you don’t think about when putting FCS plugs in a THIN tail. NO LATERAL support because of the small footing of the FCS plugs, where ProBox has alittle wider footing to better hold the load of bigger fins or smaller fins in powerful surf.

oneula, I would like to add this does not in any way mean that I disagree with Greg’s placements. I got a few emails that my posts lead the readers to believe I was commenting on Greg’s placements. Greg is a extremely good board designer and my comments were directed only to the difference of placement of FCS plug and ProBox. Hope this helps you with your experiments. Always great to see you pushing to another level, keep the STOKE.

Mahalo,Larry

OOPS, Made a mistake on the side distance. Here’s a pic below showing the flat side of the slot of the FCS to ProBox, which makes the difference 1/16" not 3/!6". So oneula I think you need not make any changes, ProBox should work in a thin tail in the same spot of FCS plugs. SORRY for MIX-UP.

mahalo Larry!

That’ll open up alot of options being able to use probox…

the regular FCS installs with all the tools needed seem like alot of work.

I did some of their fusion boxes and it was a no brainer. Nine five and zero degree plugs

ever think of using something stiffer like the metal reinforced jig FCS sells for the fusions for the red jigs.

I always seem to end up routing into the side of my jig and ruining them.

I was planning on making my own probox jigs by tracing them on to some harder material just for the cut and them using the reds to do the insertion and pour. I’ve ruined so many of the soft plastic ones…

Also Greg requires a specific 8 degree cant for his front fins any chance of getting an insert at that angle or do i have to angle in a the box during insertion with a 6 or 10 degree insert for reference? I did something similar with the fusion nine degree plugs to get eight degrees. With those bigger probox tabs I could probably carbon reinforce some of that bamboo and get some super stiff fins instead of having to use g10.

thanks again

always good info

Hi oneula, We had stiffer jigs before! The stiffer jigs are hard to use in concave or round bottom contours which is why we went to the stiffness we now use.

Has for cutting into your jigs drop the router bit adjustment a hair and you should be fine. Also when routering out a board for ProBox, route the center out first then come back and finish the route like a clean up to the outside side. This has less resistance when routering thru the glass for a clean finish and less change of heating up the bearing and ruining the jigs.

I think this will save your jigs life span.

oneula, We have 0 degree, 4 degree, 6 degree and 8 degree, so I think you are OK there without doing anything special for ProBox install. Install ProBox to finished bottom of board then pick your cant of choice.

Not sure about your comment on fin stiffness. Is your concern in the tabs or the foil. If it’s in the tabs just take away more Bamboo in the base and add fiber glass, has shown in the Greenlight Bamboo fin thread.

Alright oneula, Good questions.
