Thought I would share a new shape outline that Sean Mattison is riding shaped by John Belik. This Belik Quad with ProBoxes, Sean is riding the Hi Aspect Fiber Glass Fins with a little tip flex for performance.

Nice fin templates and damn …that J.B. is one hell of a nice looking board. It’s too bad I don’t have enough cash to buy everything I want.
Here’s another Belik Quad with ProBoxes glassed by Gott Glassing on Maui. John Belik will be coming to Southern Calif. Aug. 5th to shape some of these nice boards. For more information, contact Sean at Surfcoachusa @ Yahoo.com.

LARRY, I HAVE A 5’7" BELIK VIPER QUAD AND 6’3’ THUMB TAIL STEPUP QUAD. HE IS DEFINITELY ONE OF THE BEST SHAPERS AROUND. ALL HIS BOARDS GO RAIL TO RAIL FAST AND SMOOTH…HE IS THE ONLY GUY THAT MAKES FISH TYPE BOARDS THAT CAN REALLY GO ON RAIL AND STRAIGHT UP THE WAVE FACE WITHOUT ANY GLITCHES. WITH PRO BOX IT TAKES HIS BOARDS TO THE NEXT LEVEL, STOKED!
Sako1,
I’ll take your word that Belik makes excellent vertical fishes. But to say he is the only guy that can do that would be inaccurate.
There are enough positive reviews of Greg Griffin’s custom multifin fishes (Sunsetpoint) to more accurately say there are a least two such people. Here is just one recent review
http://www.swaylocks.com/…;;page=unread#unread
there are many more like that on SurferMag forum. check out Greg’s 5 fin Modern Fish on griffinsurfboards.com
LARRY…those fins look sweet!
Those are nice looking fins
When i come to the mainland i will visit your shop
For Sako 1 here is a link to Surfermag.com and my 5’8" demo 5-fin review
This has a quick history of my design

SORRY, I SHOULD HAVE ADDED " THAT I HAVE RIDDEN" BUT TO ADD TO THAT NOTE I HAVE SEEN ALOT OF GREAT SURFERS IN THE LAST 10 YRS THAT I HAVE BEEN RIDING FISHES GO TO FISHES AND LOSE MUCH OF THEIR VERTICAL SURFING DUE TO THE AMOUNTS OF ROCKER NOT IN THEIR BOARDS. THEY GO REALLY FAST AND MAKE LOOOOOONG TURNS AND STUFF BUT NOT AS VERTICAL AS WITH THEIR NORMAL BOARDS. IF YOU GET THE CHANCE TO RIDE ANY BELIK ESPECIALLY HIS FISH MODELS I THINK YOU WOULD BE PLEASANTLY SURPRISED. WHEN I FIRST GOT MY BELIK I THOUGHT THAT IT WAS NOT GOING TO GO UP ON RAIL WELL. ( BECAUSE OF ALL THE WIDTH IN NOSE AND TAIL AS IN ALL TRUE FISH DESIGNS) I WAS BLOWN AWAY AT HOW IT WENT ON RAIL AND STRAIGHT UP THE WAVE FACE JUST LIKE MY NORMAL BOARDS. ANYWAY THAT IT WHAT I FEEL PERSONALLY.
I HAVE ACCESS TO ALOT OF GREAT SHAPERS THAT I KNOW PERSONALLY AND HAVE BOARDS BY JC HAWAII, ERIC ARAKAWA, BARRY VANDERMULEN, AKILA AIPA, JOHN BELIK, DON KADOWAKI, MATT CALVANI, DAVE PARMENTER TO NAME A FEW. I ALSO GOT STARTED IN SURFBOARD MANAFACTURING IN 1975 WITH HAROLD IGE IN HONOLULU WHERE I’M FROM. SO ANYWAY, JUST TO MAKE A LONG STORY SHORT, I MAKE REFRERENCE TO BOARDS I HAVE RIDDEN. THANKS FOR THE REPLY.

next time you see a griffin 5 fin fish, get out your rocker stick. lots of things happening in a surfboard. lots of things happening when riding a wave.
i don’t know what’s going on, but i measured the rocker on a GG 5fin fish that i know guys are taking vertical.
You sound like someone I know…Did I sell you a 6’8" Mystic shaped by Cino some 30 something yrs ago? And take you to the doctor the time the nose of someone’s board went through your cheek? Gotta be you…hehe.
Derek
YOU KNOW WHAT THAT IS A VERY INTERESTING QUESTON. HERE GOES…MY BROTHER AND I STARTED SURFING IN LATE 69 WITH ERIC ARAKAWA AND HIS 2 YOUNGER BROTHERS. ERIC’S FATHER BOUGHT A USED MYSTIC SURFBOARDS TWIN- FIN THAT CINO SHAPED. IF MY MEMORY STILL SERVES ME IT WAS A YELLOW TINT BOTTOM, CLEAR DECK AND I THINK IT WAS 6’8". WE ALL USED TO USE EACH OTHERS SURFBOARDS AND THATS WHAT I REMEMBER FROM A CINO MYSTIC…
IN 1975 BOBBY OWENS GOT ME A JOB AT HAROLD IGE’S SURFBOARD SHAPING COMPANY AS A DING REPAIR GUY IN KAKAAKO ON QUEEN STREET, AT THE TIME IN THE GLASS SHOP UPSTAIRS WAS WHERE EVERYTHING WAS MADE. THE GLASSERS WERE GENE CAMBE, BIRD MAHELONA AND GORDON MAGALLANES (CINO’S YOUNGER BROTHER). 3 YRS. LATER GENE, GORDON AND MYSELF WENT TO WORK AT BOARDS OF WATER SUPPLY ( HIC SURFBOARDS FACTORY ) IN WAIMALU.
I ALSO DID DING REPAIR FOR CRAIG SUGIHARA’S TOWN AND COUNTRY FACTORY IN AIEA AT THE TIME. THIS IS WHEN CRAIG HAD GLENN MINAMI DOING MOST OF THE SHAPING, SOME DENNIS PANG BOARDS TOO. CRAIG HAD EUGENE ABIANG (OPU ) LEADING HIS GLASS SHOP AS LEIGHTON HAGA HAD LEFT TO GO TO HIC FACTORY, BOTH OF THEM SUPER QUALITY GLASSERS.
WHATS INTERESTING ABOUT THE PUNTURE IN THE LIP IS THAT…IN 77 I DID JUST THAT AT CHUN’S BUT I DROVE MYSELF TO WAIALUA HOSPITAL TO GET SEWN UP. WHERE WERE YOU WORKING AT THE TIME OF THIS MYSTIC TWIN-FIN??? WAS IT THE MYSTIC SHOP IN WAIANAE?? ANYWAY THANKS FOR JOGGING MY MEMORY, ALOHA.
GREG, THAT BOARD IN THE PICTURES LOOKS SUPER INSANE. AS FAR AS MY COMMENTS ON FISHES, WHEN I RIDE FISHES THEY HAVE ALOT MORE WIDTH IN THE NOSE AND TAIL AND DONT HAVE A PULLED IN NOSE LIKE YOURS. I THINK YOURS IS DEFINITELY MODERN AND FRICKEN GORGEOUS! THATS WHY WHEN I STATE THAT WHEN I’VE SEEN GUYS RIDE THEIR FLAT FISHES THEY GO FAST BUT NOT VERTICAL. JUST LOOKING AT YOUR OUTLINE I KNOW IT WILL NOT HAVE THOSE PROBLEMS. HAVE YOU TRIED PRO-BOX FIN SYSTEM IN YOUR BOARDS?? I BET THEY WOULD COMPLIMENT YOUR DESIGN WITH THE ABILITY TO ADJUST CANT AND FORE AND AFTER ON YOUR QUADS. PLUS THE GUY AT PRO-BOX DOES BEAUTIFUL CUSTOM FINS TOO. I’VE TALKED TO THE GUY ( LARRY ) HE IS LIKE THE MAD PROFESSOR OF FIN DESIGN. CHECK IT OUT. THANKS FOR THE BOARD PORN PICS…
soulstice, Great to seeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee you post! Haven’t seen much from you posting, hope all is well. (-:
hey, larry…
i know i’ve been a bit MIA lately, but in a VERY good way! unfortunately, there hasn’t been much surf out here (actually, it’s been Lake Atlantic…total flatness!), but a flat ocean means i can actually get stuff done!!! been traveling a lot for work, but still managed to find a little time at home to do a little shaping on the in between. in fact, i made a very “belik-esque” quad at 5’8". just as i was going to cut in the fish tail, i gave it a last look-over, and decided to leave it as a squash tail. i picked up glass and resin last week, though i haven’t had the time to glass it yet. i’d like your input on fin location, so i’ll shoot the specs and a few pics over to you next time i get to the shaping bay.
peace & ease…

The incident I was refering to took place when you guys were warming up before a surf meet held by Pearl City High at Leftovers ('74?) and you got injured during the warm up session before the meet. I think Dean K. won that meet, followed by Byron Iha. All I remember was that you came in with a big hole in your cheek, drove you to some doctors office in Waialua, then your dad came to pick you up after they sewed you up. The Mystic I was talking about was a used single fin swallow tail. I think I even sold your brother a used T&C diamond tail.

soulstice, Thought I would give you some pics of new Belik board ideas straight from the Islands. Mahalo,Larry
