a place to shape

I just bought a surf-ez kit and a blank the other day on a whim, now I need a place to shape. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions or stories on where to shape boards when you dont have a proper shaping bay.By the way i dont have a garage or a yard, so i guess thats the problem.

many years ago, a crew of friends and myself were in a pinch to get a ton of boards done. We were between moving to our new factory but still kept getting orders. One of the guys had two months left on a lease on a vacated townhome: so we went for it. Plastic sheeting everywhere, duct tape on all the seams. We backed the cube van into the carport and unloaded the materials. Every few days new boards were coming out. I’m still blown away that no neighbors complained about smell or noise. (the townhome was detached and away from the main cluster). It was out of hand. Shaping in the bedroom. Lamming in the kitchen. Sanding in the hall. We held out for almost a month; it was like a spy movie… Plastic sheeting and tape- you have no excuses to act out on your urges…

Early on I rented a building in a business park in West Melbourne, Fla. I had been running Dick Catri’s factory while he was in prison, he fired me when he got out and I needed a place fast. Well the building wasn’t properly zoned to do glasswork and Dick had a pal on the zoning board, so I got shot in the foot when I tried to get a variance. Claude Codgen was moving out of his Cocoa Beach factory in 2 months and I could have it. What to do? No business license or occupancy permit. I had stupidly set up the whole factory before getting the proper paperwork. My thought was, zoning inspectors must be like all city, county and state employees, 7:30 to 4:30 and then it’s home or off to the bar. I would go to work at 8 PM and knock off around last call, so I could have a beer too. I never had a problem with the MAN

Jim, how long did you use that factory? http://members.cox.net/austinsurfboards

thanks for all the responses. Ive been doing a lot of research on shaping and it looks like there is so much studying and preparing i need to do before i actually shape #1,so it looks like it will be a couple months before i start. Im thinking of a 6’3" not sure on the dimensions yet. Ill post some pics when its done to get some feedback…dont laugh when you see it

Poppycock… dive right in, learn, make #2 better.

yea right now shape it where you stand in a parking lot behind a gas station at grandma’s old washroom…/in the lawyers office while he’s in bermuda for a week…shape today glass tonight ride tomorrow and clean up the mess on saturday go go go laugh …that would be rude …not ever laughing is not acceptable especially after you get the wave of the day and rip it to molecules… ambrose… waiting with crossed arms an tappin my feet
