As is the case on many discussion boards, there is an anonymous nature to the internet that stirs people to take potshots knowing there are no real repercussions. Some folks have a number of aliases and post so frequently, it would appear they might have some sort of obsessive/compulsive disorder. The moderators I know, on the other hand, have real lives and real jobs and only lurk occasionally. …

John:

My take is that there is considerable agreement that threads that degenerate into personal attacks should be defanged. There is probably less than a consensus about how to determine when that has happened, but probably not a lot of wild differences. What bothers me is my sense that some moderators seem to lock down threads based on subject matter that they personally object to. My bottom line suggestion is: Let’s have a more specific written code of what is OT, and let’s encourage moderators to apply that code more objectively and consistently. I don’t think that a thread should be locked down primarily because a moderator finds the subject matter to offend his personal sense of politically correctness.

“…or why posts should not be deleted after, say, 60 days (to minimize the impact on site storage)…”

yep, that’s a good idea , mate !

…[that would free up at least 373 pages of forum space , in my case ! … yes , please , moderators , feel free to do that , please !]

cheers

In case I wasn’t clear, the expiration suggestion would apply only to the hypothetical “almost anything goes” forum. That way archive resources would be devoted strictly to surf/surf-design posts and not used for stuff that is probably (mostly) more temporary in nature. Unless you are saying that you have x pages of posts, and only (x-373) are on topic :->

“Unless you are saying that you have x pages of posts, and only (x-373) are on topic :->”

i am saying that with my posts not here , there would be more pages of OTHERS posts / ? more room? for others to post [but i don’t know nix about internet stuff … so, it probably doesn’t work like that , eh ?]

just out of interest …how much would it cost for 373 pages of internet space , by the way ? [just so i know what would be an appropriate amount]

cheers

ben

posting in moderation ,

moderation in postings

What happens is the guys lock threads with controversial non-surfing-related subjects,

occasionally before they go nuclear, which will happen,

because people are people, and people will read threads that they don’t agree with the overall thrust of,

and people will read posts which they disagree with,

and their views or they as people holding those views are (sometimes vigorously) insulted,

they will be offended, which is after all the purpose of insults,

and they will post opposing views, in like fashion, often,

and then you have a flame war about a non-surfing-related subject on a Surfboard Design website.

Controversy generates insult, especially on the internet. Ugliness, especially the partisan political variety, is ubiquitous enough. Swaylock’s doesn’t need more of it, at all. This should be a politics-free zone. Mike Paler has said as much, and it’s just obvious.

Again sorry Harris…it’s a joke/quote from the movie,“Tombstone” Val Kilmer as John"Doc"Holiday.Don’t read into it too much I write, unless I say to.I’ve pm’ed you a more detailed message.

Now BT is going to get all over me for this one,I’m sure.

I liked swaylocks more before everyone questioned its inner-workings. Once again ignorance is bliss.

Hi iam2sam -

Would you consider providing a link or cut/paste of a specific instance where a thread has been locked based on a moderator’s personal objection to subject matter?

Most locked threads are discussed and the action agreed upon beforehand. I can think of an instance or two where one moderator locked and another unlocked the same thread.

I can also think of a an instance where a specfic member was banned and later readmitted.

WTF - we aren’t perfect.

I gotta tell ya…I have broken bread and surfed with three of these moderators, as well as Mike P. Great guys and givers. As I am sure the ones I have not been fortunate enough to meet. In a nutshell, something mentioned in another post on this thread: “what have you done for Sways lately?”
