A Winter's Tale

Just finished watching “A Winter’s Tale” video, an early 70’s time capsule consisting mostly of Australia, South Africa and Hawaii. Shot slightly before the groundbreaking Free Ride winter of '75, it features the usual stars of the day, Fitz, Lopez, BK, Rory Russell, etc. I enjoyed seeing some stuff you dont normally see in films of that period, Yokohama Bay, Peter Drouyn at home in Qld., Buffalo, Ben Aipa and Craig Wilson at Makaha. If you lived thru this era or are curious about it, I’d highly recommend this vid. Also of interest was the boards they were riding…Lots of roundpins and diamonds. I thought they were doing pretty good on em.

I was cutting teeth then. ('74-'77) Best board I ever had (single fin) was a G&S diamond tail. Tuquoise bottom and fuscia deck…whew! Wonder why no one does diamonds any more? Had the “Five Summer Stories” promo on some book covers. Much has changed! BK & Sunset was very inspiring for the times! Mike

Yeah Foamdust, great film now and at the time. I watched it at an arthouse tiny cinema with two of my bros , for its’ opening I think…St Peters lane in Darlinghurst in Sydney…what a flashback…almost got me all teary remembering it! I saw a roundtail somewhere on a left and got so inspired I did one the next day. Cheers Greg W

I was living on top of the hill at the northern end of Whale Beach NSW Aust during the 70’s. Surfing Whale Beach & Palm Beach & Nth Avalon. I can remember going to Avalon cenima on Sunday nights to watch the surf movies of the day. Morning of The Earth is the movie that sticks in my mind the most.I still get shivers down the back of my neck when I see footage or hear music from that movie. We couldn’t wait to hit the water after school to try and surf like surfers in the movies.Good times.

Absolutely! sounds like you had better waves than I did, I was at Bondi! GW

is this available at shops or is it an underground copy??

that movie was a classic. the two aussies (steve and dave o’donnell) who were doing the east coast showings during the summer of '75 actually stayed in va. beach with a buddy and i for a couple weeks (nothing like a private screening in your living room). steve was a good shaper and had done some production work at G&S during their west coast swing. nice guys, fun times… jim dunlop
