Abel and Alan Gomes

I am looking for anything and everything that these two great men would have made. Abel Gomes did alot for tom blake and later for dale velzy. Alan Gomes won the first and second jr mens at makaha in 54 and 55. Alan also glassed for jacops and velzy in venice california late 50’s early 60’s. Alan was also in the surfer number 1 1960. Im trying to get photos, stories and surfboards for alans 5 year old grandson ryder.   any help would be great…   mark venice ca

I will tell you a story I heard;         Da Cat AKA Mickey Dora whenever he "skegged or dinged someone elses board that he may have borrowed from some innocent referred the owner to Alan Gomes Glass Shop where Dora claimed that he had an account.  Did Da Cat have an account for ding repair?  Maybe------Maybe Not.  I have over the years seen a few Gomes glassed boards.   Usually a small lam ID'ing the board as having been glassed by Gomes.

Mcding.....can you think of anything else about allan? I am going to start to write a book about allan and his father abel. here is my number 909 917 8609 . Allans two girls would love to know more about allans early surf time.'

May’be you could talk to Hap.He is still shaping.I have his cell number but proably not the responsible thing to put on this forum.

Not much of an added info for you, but in 1962 or 3 I was directed to this little shop on Main /street in /Venice and met Alan Gomes who had just changed his shpp’s name to Surfboards by Gomes and his sticker to that from the “Glassing by Gomes” that had been just below the Velsey/Jacobs decal on all this boards before.  alan made a wonderful 9’-4" roundtail with a laminated skeg that floated me higher than any board that length before or since.  Word I heard was he “drank up all his profits and moved back to the Islands” (direct quote from a friend at Malibu).  Would really like to find photos of either of his decal/logos.  That’s it for now.

Got this off the Stanley’s logo page.
