acid splash

I want to put an acid splash on the bottom of my fish. Any general advice on how to do an acid splash?

Hey Assuming you have a naked blank there, taped and ready for lam coat. Just lay the cloth as normal, mix a quart of resin, add catalyst, squirt the colors you want into the batch, mix LIGHTLY, and pour onto lam. The first thing that hits the foam, thru the glass, is the color that stays. Squeegee lightly, to avoid smearing colors. If you spray, you got me. If you already have glass on, you got me.

i was planning on the same thing. ive never done a tinted glass job. when you glass the deck, how does your logo show through? or should you lam only 1 layer first with color than lam the second without.

oop, didnt know the pic would stay from the last post

I would suggest that you divide the resin up, mix pigment and catalyst in each container and thoroughly stir each color before you put it all in one container. Once all the fully stirred and catalyzed colors are together, THEN stir lightly and pour on board. If you add pigment and catalyst and only stir lightly, you’ll end up with sections that don’t cure properly.

johns got it on the money. if you want to see a black logo you can do it after you laminate the layer. i cut a piece of 4 oz glass and slap it with clear resin after the other lamination is dry. sand the edges of the cloth and you got it. http://members.cox.net/austinsurfboards/redmarble.html

hey austin, how many oz’s of color did you add to the base color for the swirl effect?

Thanks Lee D, John, and Austin, It came out pretty cool. I used dark blue, light blue, and yellow. Not as stunning as Austin’s board and some other I’ve seen on the site, but I’m happy for a firt try. Let the sanding Begin!!!

hmm… i think it was… 1 gallon of red…just to make sure it got everywhere…4 oz of red i believe. then a quart of black with two oz and then a pint of white with one oz. i never really measure. its kinda that looks good etc. i plan on making a little video of “Artistic glassing” and burning them to dvd’s sometime soon. brrrrrrrrrr. looks cold.

Austin, Any way I can get a copy? What was interesting to me is the tint of the resin in the tubs was very different than the tint when I pored it on the board. Fun, though. Mike

Hey My apology! John is absolutely correct about mixing the catalyst and resin first, then add colors. We just added the colors to the mixed resin, then stirred lightly. Of course, we went out of business by 1977.

If any of you ever get the urge for an “acid splash” AFTER glassing (on a sanded hot coat), check out resource 812. This is an experiment with resin on a sanded hot coat. I mixed orange, red, yellow and just a few drops of black and white resin after setting off all the pots - stirred one figure eight motion - then poured about 7 lines nose to tail. Lifted the board so the resin slid side to side and then off the tail. This may be a great idea for someone new to pigmenting - if it doesn’t come out right the first time, it’ll all come of fairly easily with a bit of acetone and paper towels. but be prepared to use a bit of resin. Definitely use styrene to thin the resin cause once poured it has to slide off the board to thin out; if you touch it at all with anything, it’ll loose the effect - so no squeegy or brush! getting the resin around to the taped off deck is the tricky part Have fun! http://www.swaylocks.com/resources/Detailed/812.html

You were talking how the resin in hte bucket comes out different than on the board. There is good reason for this. My very first pigment job was a yellow board. When i mixed the yellow to the resin it turned lime green. you have to remember the resin is blue so its gonna throw off your vision. when im trying to match a color i dont do it in the resin. i mix a little pigment together in a cup and remember the amount of each, then i use new pigment and mix it up. ok now about the video. i am gonna do another marble swirl here soon. so i plan on shooting that for the video. its gonna be a blue swirl though. im going to try and include tigerstriping, marble swirls, acid splash, poured acid splash, simple lamination little tips and tricks ive picked up along the way like…When doing a huge lap volan color job to avoid getting too muddy have extra squeegees on hand, wear two sets of latex gloves so you can take the first layer off, have someone help you hold out laps on a poured or tigerstriped board, for marbles have more than one bucket of base color, just some stuff that you might not think of that really makes your end product something to talk about. I am not sure how muhc the dvd will cost but i assume around 15 bucks or so. ill try and keep swaylocks updated. http://members.cox.net/austinsurfboards/redmarble.html
