I am looking at spray painting a design onto a board that has been done in epoxy. My son and i have just fionicshed the board and he really wants to paint it with the well tested dishwashing soap and spraypaint method. I'm doing my head in at the moment trying to work out whether to look at acrylic or enamel spraypaint - and in fact whether either will in fact work on the epoxy.
I've used epoxy on this board only because it was in the shed from a few hollow wooden boards that we've done.
Anyone with any experience on spraying an epoxy board?
Use urethane paint, it forms a chemical bond with epoxy. Arcylic and enamels don’t. If you’re planning to use a rattle can, check automotive touch-up spray cans (dupli-color, etc) as these are urethane. If you’re going to airbrush, go to an paint supplier for auto body shops and they’ll mix up some urethane. If it’s just primary colors, use the small cans from a marine supply like West.
Thanks guys - much appreciated - might have to just leave it as it is I think.
I don't have the equipment to spray it myself other than with cans of spraypaint - and last thing i want to do is spray it with something that won't last. Will leave it in it's natural state.
I spray all my epoxy boards with acryllic or lacquer clear to protect them and create a nice silky smooth sanded finish so...
Rule # 1 CLean clean CLEAN! The surface has to be perfectly clean...no dirt, dust or finger oil.
Rule # 2 Prep...The surface needs to be sanded with #400 grit or red scotchbrite pad. You can do this wet...with the hose and some of that dish soap you were talking about!
Rinse well, wipe with DNA and let dry...brush of dust off with a clean dry chip brush and you are ready to rock.
Krylon acryllic works fine. Not too thick ..not to dusty and dry...several coats then rinse the mask off ..clean and dry again and then put some Krylon gloss clear over the entire board to protect it..Done!
It will not last forever...but it will stay put for a LOOOOONG time..and your son will be stoked!
Appreciate the encouragement, I might have to use the pancake syrup method as well ... have images of sitting out at sunrise, tee tree bay noosa, swell building, smell of pancakes in the air. Might just have to slap a peice of bacon on there somewhere as well just for giggles ... breakfast is the most important meal of the day after all.
Now to find a good equivalent of Krylon in Aus - very few places have stocked it and hard to find. Auto store touch up paint might be the next best bet.
Painted it up as directed, acrylic based paint from an "artists suply," (of the kind that usually use the side of a train as canvas.)
Montana Gold was the paint I got - range of colors was fantastic and we've had the board in the water now for a while without any sign of it lifting off the epoxy. Good result.
Here's the youngest heading off on first point perfection.
