acrylic paint in resin

Can I use acrylic paint to tint my resin , to glass my whole board or do  resin swirls with acrylic paint for color .

Or is that a big no no and just buy the tint from fiberglass supply or foam e-z .

That would be a no… stick with pigments and tints for mixing into resin. You can, however, do “foam stains” on the foam with paint, then glass clear over it.

thanks nj for the response .  I thought it might be a no no .  my son has shaped a  longboard 9’   about 2 1/4 " thick so it is going to be my first practice board , I think it is too thin to surf  so its the guinea pig  . I   have alraedy painted on it with acrylic paint . Abstract  swirls and all kinds of designs  , I   don’t care if it bleeds or smears but I am concerned about the glass making a good bond with the blank . If someone could comment about how well it will bond with all the acrylic paint I have  on it . I will also search archives and just see what happens .

Hey jt1

You can use the tint that they use to color paint. Just go to the paint store and ask them for the tint only. Its what they add to the base white paint to give it color. I have done a tinted bottom with it and it turned out fine. tinted it so you can just see the stringer through it. I added 1% tint per mixed resin. I used epoxy. No problems. Haven't done it with poly. I also use it to color my fin panels.

As with paint on the foam, it is usually ok if its not too thick. Sometime paint will dry and leave a shiney finish that will not give the resin anything to bond to. You usually need to sand down the shinies but that may ruin you art work and may change the shape of you foam.
