Have enclosed a picture of chest I painted for a client. I colored it in black lacquer as the background color and did the abstract with acrylic paint.
I have another person who wants a board with a similiar color scheme. So here is what i was thinking. let me know what you thinkl (good or bad). Chances are the board will be a wall hanger in an art gallery).
1)Glass the (8foot egg) with one layer of six ounce and sand to 180 grit
Tape off and do black opaque resin panels on deck.
3)Do the abstract brush work over the black.
4)Spray a light coat of clear acrlic over art. Let dry and scuff with scotchbright pad
5)Laminate a layer of four ounce over art on deck with zippered laps (not overlapped)
6)Hotcoat/sand/gloss and polish as normal.
What do you think? Any alternatives? The key to this is the solid black background. Foam spray wont work.
I have painted with acrylic paints over a glassed board with good results. A couple of things I am thinking is why do an opaque resin background? You could simply spray a solid black under painting. If you want some pop in the black go to a shop that sells custom auto paints and get an acrylic black with a little pearling in it. clear coat. Do The art work and then clear coat again. Not sure you would need to glass over the work over the finished art shoot lots of coats of clear to seal. Createx makes a line of airbrush colors called wicked colors, for doing autos and motorcycles. They are doing good on the boards i have done.
My reason for black opaque panel is because I have done a lot of them and and they are easy to do.Also am going to have yellow and white back to back resin pins butting the panels so all of this will be a connected deal.
I have a spray booth for furniture and thought about spraying the black but the resin pins create a bit of a problem so it's just easier for me doing it this way.In my 50 years of board building resin pins and panels are second nature to me. Also the depth of color and light refraction are much more intense with resin color.
Just wondering if anyone had done this. Thanks for the input. R B
this is what i would do,glass board in black after you sand the board do your design in acrylic then acrylic clear over design then finish coat entire board in finish coat resin or filler resin then cutback wetrub pollish .
Thats a beautiful board RA . My board needs to be clear laminated as the black panels are taped off and only on the deck. The panels will follow the outline and there will be a clear strip down the center so the balsa/foam Tband will show.
i have done this before and just glossed over the color as suggested but the idea about the 4 ounce just came to me after thinking about how Gene Cooper ads the xtra layer of zippered 4OZ on the bottoms of his Cooperfish boards. I am thinking the xtra layer of 4oz will give the polish that added depth that will shine like a mirror. As I said…this board will probably be a wall hanger sold in a pretty nice art gallery.
My current interest is surfboards as an art form. At 64 years old with a lot of boards under my belt i am looking for self gratification. The stuff that Jim Phillips and Gene Cooper are doing (to me) set the standard.
hi guys, I did make a longboard with yellow resin tint and put a black pinline on the botton and deck, but I had some problem with the pinline (acrylic paint), when I applyed the gloss coat (polyester), the paint smeared across the board.
I think that my gloss was too much diluted whith sthyrene.
