Acrylic paint under Resin Research epoxy.

Hi,

I’m hoping someone can offer me some guidance on using acrylic paint under Resin Research epoxy resin please.

I’m starting to build my second hollow wood board and I will be glassing it with RR epoxy as I did the first board.

What I would like to do is make the bottom of the board look better though as on the first it was plain ply and looks rubbish. I was hoping I could paint this one with a couple of colours then glass over.

I thought it wise to check if acrylic paint is ok to use under the resin or not. I have done the usual and done lots of reading around and there is such a mix of advice and suggestions that it’s easy to get int a muddle. Most advice is around foam boards and I didn’t wish to assume that wood boards should be treated the same.

Any assistance is appreciated.

Many thanks

In my experience the resin bonds just fine to acrylic paint, but the unknown is how good of a bond there is between the paint and the wood. If you’re painting a large area, this could be a concern. Have you considered adding tint or pigment to the lam coat? Might be a safer way to add color.

Yes, it was planned to be a large area but I could change the plan to have less paint with hopefully not too less of an impact. Testing with a small section will be done whatever I do.

Adding tint may be the better option but is a different direction than I had hoped from a look point of view, plus I have a source of acrylic at good cost. While I don’t want to scrimp on costs to the detriment of the build, I do need to be sensible with my budget.

I have painted large areas of wood with acrylic and then glassed over. It worked fine for me, but there are too many variables to say with any certainty yeah I know it’ll work fine for you. Sometimes you just give it your best shot and roll the dice - testing on a sample is a good way to hedge your bet.

Avoid paints with solvents. Others can be of more help than me. I know there are pitfalls with certain paints where they will crystalize under the resin. I’ve only had that happen in very small spots where perhaps my paint was too thick to begin with. If you search there should be a lot of good info in the archives.

What kind of look do you want to achieve? I have seen really nice wooden boards with slightly tinted laminations.

My experience in this field is limited to having used acrylic paint on an EPS blank with supersap epoxy, but that did work just fine, no worries whatsoever. Been surfing those boards since Feb.

My thinking was a whole paint of the underneath (though not a brilliant painting like Huck’s) with some additional colours added to jazz it up as I’ll have access to quite a few acrylics.
Thinking on it more, a tint of the resin used for the bottom only could work!

Thanks for the reply. I had seen that thread already but think I have missed anything that can specifically help with my possible problem. If you could point out which bit of it you were thinking would help, that would be great.

paint is paint, no matter the form of the painting. I think Chris may have missed that your question was specific to painting over wood. I have seen some wood boards with resin tint that looked pretty awesome. Hope you post up some pics, your project sounds interesting!

Thanks Huck!
