Adding a resource category? Templates

Cool little resource. I love the drawings of the duide shaping.

Here’s a question, how many out there are using Adobe Illustrator to create templates??

I have been making spin templates in Illustrator and then printing them out and laying them down on some matboard and cut the spin template from that. Works likie a charm.

Also I actually have been toying with the idea of having a machine shop take the file and produce a 1/8" sheet metal version of the template. Last forever and you ahve a perfect machined curve.

If there is interest I’ll post a spin template in Illustrator so ya’ll can see what i am doing.

I agree, a templates category would be great.

What exactly is a spin template? Sort of a template version of a french curve???

Darren

a spin template is when half the curve is on one side of a piece of hardboard (or other template material), and the other half of the curve is on the other side. say, for example, you i wanted to make a template for a 9’6" longboard…i’d get a piece of masonite and trace the first 5’ of curve on one side, then spin it 180 degrees (hence the name “spin template”), and put the last 5’ of curve (some overlap is good…makes sure everything matches up right).

could someone post a picture?

here is a drawing of a spin template from the glossary:

Thanks guys… It all makes sense now

This is a great thread that goes a long way toward what I think a template gallery should look like http://www.swaylocks.com/forum/gforum.cgi?post=161823;guest=1350813#161823 I would like to see the template gallery be a place where I could learn WHY people shaped the board the way they did. This way I could try to incorporate characteristics that would work for my style of surfing.
