Does anybody else think that a new resource category for template info would be helpful ? Straight numbers, “.brd” files or whatever…

yep it would work, people could just go straight there.
People could also make reference to the template when adding their board to the photo resource section.
For instance, in the description about the board it could say “The template used for this board was #231 from the template resource section”. That way, when you see a board that you really like, you can obtain a reliable template of it.
I would add templates in Autocad (.dwg) format and APS3000(.brd) format.
Kind Regards,
Matt.
Some people I know were pretty guarded with their templates, I don’t know why. Two people rarely shape the same board, and the template, although the most visually obvious, is a small factor in the overall shape of a board.
Share and share alike, I think it’s a good idea.
i think professional shapers have every right to be protective of their templates, and i understand it completely. they put a lot of time and effort into their shapes, and shaping is their livelihood. their ‘signature’ is more than just the logo or the name scribbled on the bottom of the blank…it’s the shape itself. for someone else to see one of their boards and be inspired to make something similar should flatter them. to take that board you saw and template it before making your board should piss 'em off a little. but to go up to them and ask them straight out if you can COPY THEIR TEMPLATES!!..that’s just insulting. ask jim, rich, or gene if you can copy any of their templates…i know EXACTLY what they’ll tell ya.
if you were cruising around eBay and saw that Matt Calvani was selling all of the Bing templates, how much would you pay? templates like that are priceless!..and definitely NOT for the masses to do with as they please.
however, for the backyard board builder who makes a board that turned out really great…share with the other backyard builders…it’s only proper.
Right or wrong, I don’t know, but it sure would be sweet. Man, that would be sweet!

John Carper, who has shaped one or two boards I think, says the opposite in the ‘Shaping 101’ video…words to the effect of ‘imitation is the sincerest form of flattery’, if my memory serves me correctly…
[I guess even if you get the outline the same…rails, rocker, bottom, foil, fin placement[s] will all vary , anyway…so the board may never actually ride the same as the ‘original’, anyway !!]
Man , if anyone wants to copy any of ‘my’ boards or ideas, I’d be wrapt !! [oz for ‘stoked’] … because, then, I could have someone else tell me HOW to make the damn things surf well ?!
ben
Yep Chippie, JC does say that in Shaping 101.
I can completely understand that there would have to be ground rules to protect the pro shapers as required. For instance, if you used a photo of say a Merrick shape in APS3000 to create an exact copy, then that shouldn’t be posted. However, for us backyard shapers it would be great to share the homegrown templates around.
Every now and then, I see a board in the resources or in the forum and I just think “wow”, that’s a great template and it would be great to get access to it.
Kind Regards,
Matt.
"Every now and then, I see a board in the resources or in the forum and I just think “wow”, that’s a great template and it would be great to get access to it. " Yep, me too. And when that happens, I may ‘p.m.’ the person and ask for measurements and what not. If I REALLY liked it enough to ‘replicate’ it , I’d ask them if that was okay. Just out of courtesy , I guess… But , in reality, you know and I know, in our computerised anonymity [?sp?] that even if the person said no, people on the other side of the world [or even in the next suburb, for that matter !] could / would still go ahead and do it, anyway ! [ Not worth losing sleep over , in my books.] I guess it’s like with ‘my’ photos…if someone lets me know they like my stuff and want to use it, I’m flattered . If they use my stuff regardless, what can I do ? I’m sure my photos from here and elsewhere circulate…I guess it’s a gamble you take ‘putting it out there’…it becomes more public property then. How many ‘templates’ are actually ‘original’ anyway, I wonder ? And [how / why would you “patent” them, anyway ? Who here has never gone into a surf shop with a tape measure and a note book ? Let’s have a show of hands ? …yep, I thought as much !! ben … I ,personally, reckon a template resource is a great idea ! …bring it on , I say !
My unstated intention was to post personal templates, not to rip off any pro shapers. I agree with Matt on the idea of linking through the board resource section (thats where the though popped into my head). I see loads of interesting boards there and would love to see a little more info. I know I could always PM the shaper, but it may be very educational for other newbs like myself.

Getting a template from a pro shaper is a far cry from having that shaper make you the board. Having a Skip Frye fish template doesn’t make your home built fish a Skip Frye fish. Too many other variables. The template is about the easiest part of a board to copy.
Soulstice,
Your template is in the mail. I won’t tell if you don’t. Have fun. Mike

thanks, man…i’ll be waiting by the mailbox (at least until this macking swell hits). and i’m no hypocrite…i’ll tell the world…it’s a template for a lis fish, and will be a gift for a friend who is really helping me out and wants a lis fish template more than anything in the world (although i’d certainly use it if and when i ultimately decide to try my hand at a fish). if any member of the lis crew has a problem with this, i can be reached at soulstice@gmail.com.
Have you seen the Lis Fish template and rail templates and rocker measurements and all that stuff in the Surfboard Design and Construction (1977) PDF file? That might come in handy.
Being a newbie to the forum, I am sure I am not going to get a welcome response. But being on other end of the spectrum of the shaping industry (Team rider), I would like to add my own 2 cents. I have ridden many boards around the same dimensions (even the same dimensions). But in my opinion and recall, I have had boards that are “exact” or “copies” of the template board. Did they ride the same? Heck no! Rails were too soft to far on the tail, too much entry rocker, etc. I believe exactly what good ol’ JC says on ‘Shaping 101’ in regards to the highest form of flattery. Without the ‘copying’ going on, and potentially modifying of that shape what state of surfing would we be in? I know that I have modified many of the boards that I have bought off the racks prior to starting to ride for my shaper.
I have been reading this forum for quite some time, as many references to posts on here are made in another forum I regularly post (2ndlight.com). ALL of you are amazing, I have learned so much in regards to design and have made me a better customer/team rider.
i myself would love to see a section devoted to dimensions. i agree with soulstice in that some peoples ideas and concepts are there lively hood. coke doesnt give out there secret recipe to just everyone. but then again thats apples and oranges. if there was a a special section i would put my dimensions in there

i don’t think i’ve ever seen that…where can i find it??
Here’s where I downloaded it from:
http://jfmillbiz.home.comcast.net/swaylocks/
Surfboard_Design_and_Construction_1977.pdf
It’s 3.8mb, and is a scan of 100+ pages of stuff on surfboard design. Detailed drawings and measurements and step by step stuff.
I think that would be very cool having a templates section, There is one called ‘Diagrams’ already see…
http://www.swaylocks.com/resources/pages/Photo_Archive/Diagrams/index.html
But a template only section would be epic!
Josh.
The link posted did not work for me, but you can pull it off my web site: http://fundingcashflow.com/surfing/Surfboard_Design_and_Construction_1977.pdf
Oh and by the way, I’d love a template page and check it out and contribute to it. I’d suggest both pdf and .brd so that they could be viewed or downloaded and manipulated.
got it!..thanks, 4est!
