Up until now, I’ve been doing all my sanding in my shaping room with not much ventilation. Now i’m starting to do alot more boards and have decided to add a seperate room just for sanding and airbrush. I have a few questions:
-
What is the smallest width for a sanding room to work comfortably in? I have about 8’ to work with, It will be 12-14’ long.
-
What size ventilation fan is best to use?

Can some of you guys share some pics of the rooms youre using? I’d like to see how you have them set up.
thanks, i’ve attached a pic of what i am using now, as you can see, theres a ton of sanding dust on the walls, and we all know how bad that is for the lungs. I’m trying to make my workspace a little cleaner so i dont have dust all over my shaping tools, and to make it a little better to breathe in.
i’m in the process of finishing up my all in one bay at the moment. most of the pro’s say you don’t need a tonne of CFM moving as long is there is a constant draft. The most important thing is to trap the very fine dust or at least get it out of the room. ie there’s no real point of running a dust collection system if it only filters down to 10 microns or something and recirculates the little stuff around the room.
My combo shape/sand has an exhaust fan that sucks the dust down and out like a wind tunnel. The fan came from Grainger Supply. I have had naybe ten sanding rooms and this is the best. I like a lot of air moving.
I live out in the country and have no neighbors so the dust being exhausted is no problem. Sanding dust and foam dust are inert anyway.
thanks for the pic cleanlines. I measured the space today that i want to use, Its just over 6 feet. Im hoping it will be enough to work in. Not planning on putting shelves or anything on the walls, just in the corners.
oh and what size is that fan? looks huge
Nice.
I once had a room very similar.
Shape/Sanding Room combo.
For sanding, nothing beats a fan down low as the dust always falls.
Good job.
6 ft should be plenty of room if your just sanding. I shape, glass and sand in a 7 ft wide space. Its kinda cramped with the lights on the side but its very doable.
You could also make your racks moveable so you can off set them to one side when you are sanding 1 side of the board. Or just have them off set all together and flip the board to sand the other side.
Small space = thinking out side the (small) box…
I think 6’ will be plenty, it leaves at least 2 feet on both sides for moving around.
what height off the ground is good? I also dont have a way to put it on the wall directly behind the board. Will putting it in the corner or side wall get the job done?
heres a link to a fan im looking at. will i see a major difference getting a 20" fan over a 24"?
