Do you really need to add extra styrene to lam resin for a good gloss? If SA already has styrene, is that good enough, or do you really need to thin it out more with additional styrene?
I’m looking to add some pigmented lam resin to my clear gloss resin to give some more depth of color to the final coat. I’m thinking about a 8oz of gloss resin + 8oz of pigmented lam resin + 15cc SA = a good, thin, waxy, deeply tinted gloss resin.
It’s a custom color that will be impossible to re-create. I have some left over (heavily pigmented) lam resin that I wanted to use to tint the gloss coat and match the lam, particularly around the rails, perfectly.
Howzit NJ, First off is the resin lam or sanding? The best way to make fake gloss resin is to make sanding resin then add some extra styrene to thin it more so it will flow out really smooth. Yes SA does have mostly styrene in it but if you don't thin it with extra styrene it's just another hot coat which will be thicker.Do some testing since you can add to much styrene,Add no more than 10% extra styrene Aloha,Kokua
Howzit NJ, So it sounds like you are trying to stretch the amount of gloss by adding lam resin right! This changes a few things, By adding lam resin (especially that much) the gloss resin will kick a lot faster then straight gloss resin so you don’t want to use as much catalyst as you would with just gloss resin. Also with the gloss resin added you don’t need to add as much styrene. If it was me I would just but a little more glssing resin and do it right because with your idea you would need to do some testing to get the chemical mix right and that will use up some of the resin you have. The only time I add any lam resin to gloss is when the gloss resin is old and won’t kick right which is a trick for using old gloss resin. Like I said, buy more glossing resin.Aloha,Kokua
Alright… I don’t want to compromise the gloss, so I’ll just add maybe an ounce of tinted lam resin to the bucket of gloss. It won’t give me the color I’m looking for, but that’s less important than the gloss.
