adhesion problems with klearlam epoxy

I’ve had this problem with other epoxies including RR until I started using Additive F. Never had an issue with peeling epoxy hotcoats again after I started using this stuff. Problem started coming back again when I ran of it.

Hey Paul good to see you’re still kicking.  I’m still dong a few.

I’ve done about 8 boards with this and I find it really finicky.  It doesn’t wet out that great and blushes almost immediatley.  Scrubbing is a must and using a wax and grease remover helps (make sure you have a fully saturated lam though - ask me how I know).  I’ve used a bunch of different epoxies and I’ve never used one with as many bonding issues.  It goes off fairly quick which isn’t that helpful IMO since you gotta wait for it to cure enough to sand and scrub.  I’ve got enough for probalby another 8 or 10 boards but I won’t get any more.  You’re right that it is nice and clear but I liked the old stuff I got from them better even though it yellows.

Any of you guys planning on coming to Taranaki for Waitangi weekend?

I agree on the wetting out you really need to get all the cloth coverd with resin as fast as poss. Its really not that good of a resin

I not sure if i can get down on waitangi at this stage would be keen as but may have family plans

heya jon. hear you on the wetout. it realy does behave like poly so you need to use poly amounts for a decent wet out i think. so no lamming with a brush and 200 grams. price is right if i can get the hang of using it… might be keen for a trip to the naki if the waves are gunna be good. i went to raglan yesterday and had a yawny at indicators . 2 foot with some lulls in the crowds and the odd head high set. direction was perfect

**oh my god **

you guys not hearing me about the kinetics

oh well it can take while for the penny to drop

is this a price thing  or availability?

Hey Huie,

Thanks for the info on Kinetics.  This is definitely an avaialability thing.  This is a small place.  The guy who was selling Klear Lam used to sell Kinetics but then got Adhesive Technologies ( local resin manufacturer - they make West Systems for NZ as well as several other epoxies) to make a clear surfboard epoxy.  He stopped carrying Kinetics and I don’t know of anyone else suplying it.

Everyone had good intentions.  He and the guys at adhesive technologies are good guys, helpful, and generally know their stuff about epoxy.  I think they didn’t quite hit it with Klear Lam.  I had a heads up from a mate about possible bonding issues and have been super careful with it and generally getting good results.  But I don’t make a living doing it or usually even a profit - just boards for me( waay too many), my kids and a few friends.

It’s probably too difficult to use for someone making their living laminating.  I know for sure of one shop that tried it and bailed.  In a place this small word gets around and you generally only get one shot at something like this.

Most surfboard manufacturing in NZ is poly/pu and even that is small.  Probably more than half the boards I see are imports. Surfboard epoxy - forget it - easier to source materials through the boat building industry.

hi huie adhesive technologies is a sister comapany to the aussie one that makes kinetics and they share recipies. kinetics appears be similar to resin research. klearlam is nothing like these resins . it is blue and runny like polyester resin. i think it has great potential personally and its a lot cheaper and locally made resin

yes i understand the prob

but the new kinetics is just insane  there is a big demand for it so its gona be hard for you guys to get it i think

one company trying to monopilise sales is not making it easier

i would try gregs resin but the price is a bit high

anyway i am so sensitised to epoxy even worse in this f##king heat

hey guys thanks for the help with this I got the board sorted . here is a photo

cheers guys

Just sanding and re hotcoating required? Beautiful looking finish by the way.

yeah kind of.... I had some trouble getting all the old hotcoat off well so I end up sanding the whole lam (weave) flat to get a nice smooth surface.  Then put an other layer of 4oz cloth down. next washed and scotch brited the hell out off the  board  before lightly sanding the lam and hotcoating. I am pretty happy with the finsh but as always lots of room for improvement

How about some more pics of that board Antony? Looks pretty good…

go back to first page  the 125 hardner is the key

hi huie. kinetics is manufactured by adhesive technologies and sold under licence through a surfboard distributer???. i believe it would be sold to boat builders by now under a re brand from the same company . the manufacturers are not that dumb as to limit sales to a a few drums when they could be selling it by the tonne to the boat building industry. Maybe ring them up and ask them for "something like kinetics’ . the chemists here in New Zealand developed recipies for the australian company so they know there shit. i think that the klearlam is in many ways a better resin then kinetics. it is clearer and runnier and cheaper . i think once we have sorted the blush problem we may have a winner

you and i need to have a talk     ** i dont have any prblm  it seems you guys do**

hey guys I just did a board in this resin from terry at the fibreglass shop in hamilton. Its really good to work with and wets out the cloth way better than klearlam heres the link to there web site It cost me $135 for a 3lt pack http://fibreglassshop.co.nz/products/view/11/26/liquid-shield

I still have not found a supplier for kentics here yet
