Advice for a 6'5" and 6'9"

I am shaping two boards to take to the Maldives and could use some advice. One is a rounded pin 6’5" step up shortboard that I’m shaping from a factory clark foam 6’4"R blank. The other is a rounded pin 6’9" mini-gun shaped from a 6’9"R factory also. My question is for the rockers and widepoint adjustments. I’m 30 5’7 175pounds and surf three+ times a week and have surfed since I was 5(for an idea of performance needs). I’m fine with the nose rockers, I have a more extreme tail rocker on my 6’2" so I’m not sure where these two boards should be. Also the widepoint, my shorty is at 2" forward. Thanks alot for any advice.

Aloha

go to the CI website and get some real good rocker views…smooth/relaxed = fast…widepoint views are there as well…for a travel board, i like mine right in the middle

Good luck achieving your length desires.

Easiest to use what rocker Clark gave you, but these are supposed to be stepup boards, so rocker shouldn’t be made for your local small mush waves.

Since you’re the shaper, NOW’s the chance to move WPoint anwhere you would like it.

Hey Jeshua,

glad to see you finally got to this site, welcome.

We took a bunch of boards to the Maldives in September and according to locals, the surf was unusually big and very consistent for the place so my views may be biased.

Basically, you can use a shortboard until it gets about 1-1/2 overhead. It is clean and semi-hollow, not heavy like the Mentawais; very rippable.

I’d set the widepoint about 2 inches back on the gun, possibly at center, and about 4 inches back on the shorty. You will be doing a lot of turning, hitting the brakes, and sprinting to make sections. That’s just my two cents; you know the look of our boards so maybe the do/don’t suit your tastes.

Lastly, I was pleasantly surprised how well the guys with the 5-finned bonzers did. The boards had just the right speed range and I was very impressed by the broad size range in which the boards did well…

PS. Hope Mark takes the Spoon on your trip, there’s a couple break that would be perfect for the thing.

Hehe …well done you spotted it too . I wasn’t going to say anything [for a change!] , but I wish my 5’7 green single fin could have ‘morphed’ into about a 6-6’2 as I was shaping it ! ben Jesh , as Lee says , now you’re shaping it , you can have fun moving your wide point wherever you feel like … good waves to you mate , I hope you SCORE !!

Thanks G. 4 in. back for a shorty??? Wow I would never guess that far. One other guy I talked to said 3 and I thought that was a lot. So four for shortboards. I’ll give it a try on my next one. I got impatient and cut my outlines lastnight. My plan was to use my entire 6’4" c which measured just under 6’5" but I ended up just making a 6’4" 11 nose 18 3/8" wide with a 13 .75" tail with a pin. I put the wide point at 1.75 in. so I may kick the tail rocker slightly to compensate.

Mark is planning to bring the spoon. I am bringing my water housing for my video cam so I’ll hopefully have some sweet video of the spoon in action. I still have not seen the spoon. Need to check it out.
