So I picked up a 9in Larry Allison “flex” fin to try on my 7’4 Mitsven egg. Unfortunately I bought it online so I had no idea that it doesn’t really flex at all. A little more research would have revealed that Larry Allison considers it a “pivot flex” fin. There is a lot of material on the entry foil and in the center creating a very stiff fin. I like the template, Greenough style, but was hoping for some bendy flexy action. The fin that came with the board is a 7in Skip Frye. I wanted to try something with more base and flex.
I’ve never shaped a board or foiled a fin before. Is it too risky for me too try to thin down this $60 fin? Who would I take it to if I wanted it done professionally? I surf in the Santa Cruz area.
You could ask him yourself right here:

Foiling is not too hard to learn but I’m sure it takes years to master.
“Practicing” on a $60 fin might not be the best way to go about it.
Maybe sell that one and pick up another?
You can do it by hand if you have the time. The right tools streamline the process tremendously, but knowing which one to use and when is the rub.
If the fin is a good one it may be worth the trouble.
There are so many templates available it can be very confusing. Some will flex out nice others aren’t worth the effort.
