air brush advice

Hi.

I’m on the verge of purchasing an air brush and need a little advice.

Is there any specific paints required. I’m presuming that the normal acrylic paints from teh art supply shops are fine ???

Is there any preferable solvents for thinning out these paints ???

What size compressor should I buy. I’m not going to be doing very detailed work. More than likely I’ll use the brush for large areas and fading colors .

Any advice is very welcomed

Thanks

Brian

for larger areas get a touch-up gun, not an airbrush.

acrylic paints work fine

acrylic thinners are better than water, try Future or similar

for a compressor, bigger is better, you want a decent size tank too. depends on your budget, really.

just my 2 cents worth…

Brian,

I’d also re-think getting a detail gun as opposed to the airbrush. I have both and the detail guns sounds much better prescribed for your needs. I also bought a cheap 2hp /4gal compressor from Pep Boys for 99 bucks - when paired with the detail gun, it just makes it for fades and whole board sprays (runs low on air=wait, spray, wait spray). A little bigger tank would be nicer.

Get the bigger compressor, 5 hp 20 gallon minimun. You’ll use it fo all sorts of other stuff. If you can’t buy a new one ($350.00) get a used one out of the newspaper or swap meet.

I know this sounds really stupid but whats the difference between an airbrush and a touch up gun.

Any makes / model numbers would be great coz I’m sure if an air brush was sittign next to a touch up gun I wouldn’t know the difference.

The names ‘detail gun’ and ‘touch up’ have the same purpose and the name is universally used for both. I’ve used both on my little compressor but the type with the cup on top can be used with a little less air pressure.

Hope it helps,
