Air bubbles in the lamination

I’ve checked the archives and found a lot of people with air bubbles in the lamination, but not where I seem to be having them.  I am getting them on the side of the board along the hard edge of the rail near the tail.  It is only my third board, but I do not seem to be getting any better at glassing.  I am also getting alot of bubbles in when I glass on the fins.  It seems like the longer I take the more air bubbles appear.  Right now I am laminating two pieces of 6 oz on each side of the fin, all at the same time.  Does anyone put a piece on each side, let it cure then put on the second piece?  I was wondering if that would let me get the air bubbles out easier.

Thanks for the help.  My shaping and sanding improved a little since my last board, and it is great riding a board you shaped yourself!

If you try and shape the board and laminate with a razor sharp rail the fibreglass has trouble wrapping 90 degrees, so your rails have to be shaped slightly softer, and you make the hard edge razor sharp while hotcoating and sanding, trying to wrap the glass around a sharp edge can cause air bubbles.

I never do glass on fins so I’ll let someone else chip in on that subject.

…many variables…how thick is the resin you using? What catalist ratio? Do you wet the roving and cloth before apply over the fin? If you doing all right you can glass 2 layers no problem. The thing with the bubbles is that you need to get the right amount of resin for the cloth…your hand pressure is key…

Dificult to tell what you doing wrong, when we dont know how you doing it…if you describe your technique , will be easier to help…

Yes a pic would be best.  For one thing you didn’t say whether or not you were using Epoxy or Poly.  Differant resins.  Differant reasons.

Yup…the first day you go surfing you suck…takes a while before you can ride the face…Glassing is an art…and a skill too. It takes more than 3 fins to figure it out…

I bought a video…the process is correct but the resin mixing is wrong…had to learn on my own…glass on lots of fins…do research…find good and bad on the internet…

Currently I use RR Epoxy Resin. And Fin Rope or Woven roven. 2 layers of 6 ounce cloth. very slopy…lots of hands on …and then squeege…its hard work. takes a lot of time and planing. You do not become an expert overnight…
