Hello all. I was just wondering if you guys(and gals) can help me out with a question I have about what type of air compressor to buy. I wll not be doing any large production but would like the compressor for using a grinder on my laps and to airbrush with. I just wonder what gallon/hp/psi I need in order to do both with. Any help or info you could share would be great! Thanks in advance. Jeff
Jeff, Your sander should have a cubic feet per minute requirement on it somewhere. Make sure the compressor you buy meets that minimum CFM production. Most homeowners type compressor will all deliver 120 psi, which should be plenty for your sander and airbrush. The tank size is totaly dependant on your patience level. Smaller tanks need to be re-filled more often which means more compressor startups and more noise more often. But smaller tankd compressors are cheaper so its got be a judgement call. P.S. Depending on your climate you may want to think about a in-line water seperator.
I’d get at least a 25gal, try to get a 30. The little grinder uses a lot of air and once you have it you’ll probably find other uses for it.
Yep. The thing is that a grinder, even a little die grinder, uses a lot of air while the airbrush or small sprayer uses relatively very little. The compressor that’d be best for the airbrush won’t work at all with the grinder while the one that’s best for fairly continuous work with the grinder will be expensive, take up a lot of shop space and probably blow fuses and brown out your neighborhood. A better move might be to go with a small compressor designed to be used with an airbrush and an electric sander/polisher/grinder. You can have both (
Jeff…if you’re gonna use an air brush with your compressor, don’t forget to slap on a water trap! You’ll save yourself a lot of anguish. Enjoy! T.
…Get a oiled motor compressor(20-30gal.),quiet,longerlife(if maintained),blows fewer fuses(less resistance).Up right tanks are good for space saving.Talk w/ someone in your hood that knows about using a compressor correctly.Herb
