Air Compressors & Spray Guns

Any recommendations for a nice and preferably cheap spray gun and compressor? I’m going to be doing basic sprays, no fine artwork.

Any old compressor from Home Despot

Any old airbrush from you nearest art store.

Wife got me a little compressor from Costco. I already had scrounged up (free) a beat up Paasche single action airbrush, which used to cost around $35.

If it’s just basic stuff, then get basic stuff, cheap, used, etc. until your tastes become more refined. Then use the search function, this has been gone over already.

Deanbo: There aren’t huge differences in air compressors. The oil lubed ones are usually quieter, if that’s a consideration. Some of the smaller ones are so loud, you think they’re going to explode. Include an inline water seperator: cheap and necessary.

For spraying it’s best to have at least an 11 gallon tank.

Most Home Depot spray guns are Taiwanese or Chinese made copies of American guns, and for most spray jobs they work pretty well.

But after many years using the cheaper guns, I finally bought a good spray gun from an auto paint store. The difference was huge. The spray is finer, more controllable, and lays the paint down more evenly. The brand is Finish Line, made in England.

But before you go to H.D. try some pawn shops, and flea markets. Lots of the quality stuff is cheap. In spray guns DeVillbis is good and also Binks. HVLP is a good bet too. (High Volume Low Pressure).

Happy hunting, and good luck,

Doug

Hey Deanbo-

You should also pay attention to the CFM your spray gun will need to determine the compressor capacity. Some guns and other air tools require a lot of air, so may need to get a bigger compressor to accomodate them. HVLP spray guns are especially hungry.
