It is just like everything else in life. It all depends on how much you want to spend. I bought a compressor for sanding (about $220) and went to a local place which supplies body shops (automotive) and got a door jam gun (they run anywhere from $25 to $100). It is smaller than what you would use to spray a car with, but larger than a normal air brush. It is what they use to paint door jams and other areas where you need to limit the amount of overspray. It works really well for painting boards, solid colors and gradients. You can’t paint fine line with it but you can achieve a lot with tape. If I want a pattern on a board I will tape the deck or bottom off with 4" masking tape. Draw my pattern then cut it out with a razor and pull off the tape where I want the color. I tape a skirt around the rail so I don’t get overspray on the other side. You can get airbrushes and small compressors at art supply stores. The problem is that normally everything is very expensive. I have seen airbrushes alone that were over $100. Createx is a good paint to use, it is premixed and sprays well. You can also use house paint. Anything you use has to be acrylic (water based).

I do about 6 boards a year. I got a air brush from Michaels Arts and Crafts for $20. It runs off cans of air. Typically, I get about 2 boards out of a can of air (depends on graphics). The cans are about $8. If you are going to get serious about the # of boards and some serious graphics, then get one that will attach to a compressor. They are in the 100-175 range, plus a compressor.

How much can I expect to pay for a basic airbrush set-up? What will that > include? And where can I buy everyting?>>> Thanks D Harbor Freight Salvage has air brushes, but what you really want is a jamb gun. They have those also for about 15$, maybe slightly more. You need hoses, a compressor, paint, tape, razor blades, masking paper, all fo the stuff to do a neat job. http://www.JimtheGenius@aol.com
