Airbrushing Blanks

Recently shaped an egg and picked up some water based acryllic in quart containers. How far can a quart stretch? I’m spraying an 8’ egg and a 9’ nose rider. Nothing fancy, just solid top&bottom with a cheapo Harbor Freight gun. Any suggestions on mixing secrets or tips would br greatly appreciated. Cheers! Searched the archives and found a dizzying amount of info- too much almost. Thanks again for any input

Howzit landlord, A quart will go a long ways especially if you need to thin it. What brand is the paint? should be more than enough for both boards. If you thin it use about 50% water and 50% waterbased acrylic thiiner or the waterbased floor sealer that Herb uses Spitzer uses. That info should be in the archives or another Swaylocker can post the brand name. Aloha,Kokua

Warning - Noob with my .02. Mixed in a 5oz dixie cup, a glob of paint about the size of a grape on the end of a tongue depressor. Then eyeballed 30/70 water & future floor wax. Total about 3oz mixed really well. I’ve found this enough to do a 1/2 panel on a shortboard, for examplthe yellow on the board I did below. An inexpensive HVLP spray gun from Lowes and a 7 gallon sears compressor. PRACTICE FIRST - TEST SPRAY

Got the paint from Surf Source, so it’s not auto body spray bombs. Decent paint, just looking for that proper mix ratio to warrant decent results. Thanks to all for the info

Bud- Thanks. That winged diamond tail you posted recently looks insaaaaaane! It’s nice to see talent mixed with humility. Your work looks exceptional as of late. Many practice runs will go down prior to the final painting attempt. Thanks again for your input.

Landlord,

Mix with some distilled water and Future Acrylic Floor Finish. (It’s not wax). Use just enough of those two items to allow the paint to flow through the gun without slowing down. Thicker than water, but thinner than cream. If it’s not flowing through the gun properly you’ll know because you’ll get lots of air and not much paint. I use about half Future and half water, but rule of thumb is not more than 20% thinning.

Spray a few light coats, letting each dry before you spray the next coat. You can speed up the drying with a hair dryer, which is a good idea to keep the paint from bleeding under any tape you’ve applied.

Also: When you pour the paint into the gun, stretch a piece of panty hose over the cup to filter out lumps.

Doug,

Great info for sure. I’m assuming I should do rails & deck- let dry flip it with wax paper to avoid oily finger tips, and continue with bottom. What works best in your experience. Many thanks for your input. L.

Landlord,

I usually do the larger areas first. Like the bottom and rails: all at the same time. Then flip for the deck. Using wax paper is correct. However, be sure the paint is completly dry before flipping. I usually leave the board overnight, even after using a blow dryer get the water off the surface.

One of my concerns has always been flipping a freshly painted board and laying the painted surface onto shaping stands. There is a danger that whatever is used on the shaping stand: foam or carpet will contaminate or stick to the paint. I’ve had no problems if I do the following:

  1. Make sure the paint is really dry.

  2. Use foam rubber on the shaping stands or paint stands.

  3. Blow off the foam rubber with compessed air to remove foam dust and dirt.

Howzit landlord, I start at the middle of the blank and work my way to the rails, seems to work well. Also instead of using wax paper just wash your hands before flipping the board.Aloha,Kokua

Many Thanks. I’m feeling confident now. I’ll try tp post up some finished product as time allows.

Bud, very nice. How did you get the pin lines on without messing up the color work?

Was wondering what kind of Tape you guys used on the raw blank for paint…

I used 2727 and some 3M Green Autobody paint, and a part on the stringer, doesn’t stick too good… Any tips?

Thanks

3M 233, available at most surf supply shops.

Howzit cosmo, You can buy the 3m 233 in many widths,1/8" and up. This is the tape for the stringer. As for taping off the foam, use a wider 3m 322 tape for the first tape off then you can use a cheaper tape for extra coverage. Aloha,Kokua

Hey Kokua, Howzit, Yeah, I used the 1/8" for my stringers veytime, and that’s been doing great, I’ll try the 322 to tape off the blank first time, then as soon as my first colot is painted, what kind tape do I put on the dried pinted surface so it doesn’t peel off all my paint (last time Man I messed up bad on that with regular 3M 2727 - sticked like crazy, and peeled off everything…

Howzit cosmo, After you paint, spray some Krylon spray can acrylic over the area you will be taping over, then when it’s time to pull that tape use a heat gun or hair dryer on the tape as you pull the tape,it basically melts the adhesive and the tape pulls off with out taking he paint under it. Old trick that has been posted quite a few times. Aloha,Kokua
