Aku Shaper question

Hey guys. I’ve got a quick Q about Aku Shaper. I read in the help section that you can line line your shape up with your blank in the “Machine View” tab. So how do you get the side view of your blank into the Machine View, and somehow get it scaled right? That sounds like it would be a great way to pick the right blank (assuming the oulines and foils given by the blank manufacturers are to scale?).

Use Shape 3D - Version 8

The blank function works perfectly

Do you have a link to the version 8 download? Sounds just what I need for my next wood project.

Cheers SD, I’m right on to it.

Not sure what you mean. It is shown already scaled, unless you’re trying to do something I’m not aware of.

I guess that wasn’t very clear, now that I look back on it… Here’s what I was trying to get at. The US Blanks catalog has a side view of the blank, with all rocker, thickness, and width numbers on it. I just wasn’t sure whether the drawing is simply meant to give a reference so that you can see where each measurement is taken, and see the rough shape of the blank, or whether that drawing would actually match the actual blank (to some reasonable accuaracy) if it were blown up to full size. Does that make more sense?

So basically what I mean is would I just take the drawing given by US Blanks for the profile, use it as an “Image Board”, and create a .brd file of the blank? Is this what I could then use in Aku as the blank file in the machine view?

In 2008 All the US Blanks will be in Shape 3D format this will make it easier to fit your rockers to your models.

So I tried doing this with the method I asked about above, and I came upon a porblem… I can shift the board up, down and side to side, but I can’t rotate it. So I end up with the nose sticking out of the deck of the blank, and the tail sticking out of the bottom of the blank… Is there any way to rotate either the blank or the board to get them lined up parallel when I shift the board forward or backward in the blank?

Yes, you can do that. It sounds like that’s what you want, what you’ve written in your last paragraph.

Also, when in the machine view, I assume you know, but you can hold down the shift key and press the arrow keys (all of them) to tilt the board at the tail. That will help you fit the board in the blank in whatever way you choose.

Jimmy

Didn’t know about the tilt option. Thats exactly what I was looking for. THANKS!!!

Do any of ya’ll know how to get a 70’s type swallow tail on Aku Shaper??

The short answer is that you can not do it… But… if you play with the points a little you will figure out how to get something that looks a little like a fish tail with some extra squigly lines that you can just ignore.

US Blanks will email you a .brd file of any of the blanks you’ll find in their catalog. Give Kim a call or shoot her an email. Their customer service is second to none.

I believe that is somewhat inaccurate.

???

You must be registered with them as a legitimate business and be conducting business with them, although I could be wrong.

I ran into the same problem. Because the board length has to be entered none of the swallow points can go past the end point and I am not able to draw the end point in. My theory is that if you tried to run the design trough the machine it might cause a swallow tip to fall off?

here is a rough draft of a fish. you can play with it some more to fit your needs. hope it helps.

You can design the swallow tail however you cannot cut it unless you have a small diameter on the cutter head.

Normally you design the board square at the tail then cut out the swallow by hand.

After you have designed and saved your blank file you can call it up for future reference. Do this by going to the Machine Parameters screen and and clicking on the Select Blank Profile button in the lower left hand part of the screen. Once you select the blank it will show in the machine view screen and you can place your design file inside.
