this is the problem. count the cutouts on the main spar… too many.
Sometimes we so over-think things…
Call me old-fashioned, but what’s wrong with designing right on the material that’s going to be the inner frame…
With a pencil…
Then cutting things out with a knife…
I’ve seen fourteen year-olds do it that way…No problem…
Just 'cause you got a computer doesn’t mean you have to use it for everything…
Wait, maybe I can use my lap-top as a squeegee…???
Paul - still designing and hand buiilding things the way God wants us to…
I’m with you Paul. I design over cardboard, and save the templates for future reference. I make templates of rocker, cross-mambers, top/bottom skins and inner rails. This way I can always duplicate a board without having to draw everything again.
Tried once to use akushaper but found it too difficult and not as acurate as hand-drawing. Doing it full scale gives you a better impression of the final product right away. More control…

Looks like all you need to do is ignore the slot on the nose and the tail?
jesus paul! sorry i asked. i guess not all of us are as skillfull as ‘14 year olds’ or the great paul jensen.
the reason im using this method is because im not 85 years old. i like to use technology to improve my board design process. whats wrong with that?
thanks anyway…
Feelin some heat in winter.
Somethin about the best of both worlds. I love the “old fashioned” way and find more of myself there in some ways than anywhere else. In defense of tech; It is convenient to carry around a 12’ template on a two inch usb drive. Im glad to have both, a pencil and lap
Top!
Edit: The slice measurement posted on the template should help but I have not had many problems with that. Interesting to see if it chucks out the extra on a new board.
Hey Shifty,
what is “hollow board template maker”? Is this a programme? If it is, where can I get it and what does it do? I have been drawing up some plans for my next wood project on AKU, but want to play around with 3 full thickness stringers on this one and a diferent rail method. This is a bit too complicated for AKU a it aint what its meant for. I have no objections to technology, it just objects to me.
Hey FBLA - Just Googled it and it seems like it is a program. First hit was a link to Grain’s forum, one of the members trying to get in contact with the program’s creator, second hit was the Shaperoom.net forum (in French) but having a link to the program…
yeh, it is a really cool program. look up aku shaper in google and download the free program then check out this website http://www.grainsurf.com/forum/
for heaps of info on how to use it. someone developed some kind of plug in thing so you can turn a surfboard design into hollow templates. this is my first attempt so im still a little green but im getting there. as for the too many rib thing i mentioned, i just added them at every 8" instead of 10" and it comes out fine. its confusing but youll understand when you download the program.
this is the sort of stuff you can do with the hollow board template maker. (my next project)…
Hi Shifty,
Could you please send me your aku shaper template ? I’ll check where the bug come from …
Shifty/Waxfoot
I’ll see if I can seek that out later, cheers for the links.
Hi there Shifty,
Long thread to not get the answer for the question that started the thread
The answer is - Yes, I have had the same problem.
Seems that the program doesn’t create the first rib on the design (from the first slice in akushaper)
To solve this, I put a new slice in my akushaper design that was 0.5" before the first slice.
e.g. If your first slice is at 8", put in a new slice at 7.5"
Rerun the design through the Hollow board template maker and magic - you have the number of slices you were after.
I only found this last night and I’ll send a post to http://www.treetosea.org/ when I get a minute.
Hope this helps,
-Cam
Shifty,
Another update - I went to treetosea.org to post a question re: the problem
JedAil has posted an update in the last 24 hours
New version works fine.
-Cam
thanks for that. in a round about sort of way i guess i did the same thing and thats why it came out ok later. i just ended up putting the first rib about 1" from the tail and its done the same thing. what is jedail’s post under in grain surf? i couldnt find it. where abouts in vic are you? your pretty close to me…
Hi Shifty - I’m in Melbourne, but surf down your way
Currently making a HWS with Paulownia.
7’0 x 20.5" x 2.75"
Designed the board in AkuShaper and frame template developed using JedAil’s app.

Found the link under JedAil’s first post under “Design process” on the TTS forum.
That frame looks nice. What length will it be?
(my next project)…
Put the slots in the stringer on top…
Stronger in compression…
